Divorce

Emily strongly represented my interests and the interests of my minor child and even, ultimately, those of my young adult children. She listened to my goals, worked in accord with my ambitious timeline to dissolve the marriage and applied both her legal skills and social perceptiveness to critically ...examine the unique circumstances and identify weak spots in legal strategies. While no one could fully anticipate what the other side would do, Emily’s impeccable judgement, focus and professionalism reinforced my bargaining position and delivered a swift settlement that was better than expected.

Unique, caring, impressive

After an emergent situation with my teen daughter, I was feeling completely helpless. I had called for help from police to court offices and others just to be discouraged. I called Emily Smoak's office and spoke to Conor Murphy. He listened, was patient, very encouraging and helpful without money bei...ng the first words he spoke. I felt truly understood, and immensely reassured. He was able to answer some basic questions, clarifying how I could go about addressing the issues and how the law office could assist should I need it. I cannot tell you how unique, kind and memorable this experience was, and will look no further for any of my law needs. Excellent!

Exceptional

Family law can be painful when you are sad and your life is crumbling around you. But, I was fortunate enough to meet an exceptional human being who took my part and fought the battle for me, Emily Broadhead Smoak. Now, she was an exceptional attorney, calm, poised and very knowledgeable, and we ha...d a stunning victory over injustice that was a complete legal knockout (I have had very few of those in my life). But that part wasn't the part that moved me. Prior to our moment in court, we sat through about 20 minutes of a rather acrimonious divorce where a man and woman who were once in love spewed poison at one another. I heard Emily very low but quite clearly say to herself "I don't think my husband could do anything that would cause me to divorce him like this". Stunned, I sat still for a moment. And asked, Nothing? and this part I am less clear on but it went something like this..."after sitting through these cases and seeing the pain I just couldn't do it'. That impressed me...deeply. Here I had the legal equivalent of a Great White and she was a believer in marriage and commitment and didn't thrive on the seedy side of the business. She was a friend to me when I needed it, a calm voice in a storm and a great human being. And just in case you were wondering, Justice and Emily prevailed

Go with the best!

When I began my journey, I had no idea what divorce would look, nor feel like. I do remember that the overwhelming feeling was one of distrust. I no longer trusted my wife, I lost trust in my friends and almost lost trust in my own self. I had never sought legal counsel before in my life. I was... told to not trust attorneys, as they were all out for themselves... I was referred to Smoak Law, P.C. by a colleague and he assured me that Emily Smoak was different from the rest. This could not be more accurate! I can say with full confidence and exhilaration that hiring Emily Smoak was one of the best decisions that I have made. Smoak Law has exceeded my expectations, first as a kind, patient, listener, as well as trusted, ethical legal counsel. She is the best! Divorce is never easy and I would imagine divorce is rarely pretty. Emily has made this journey more than tolerable as she of course looked out for my best interest, but she was fundamentally attentive to the on-going interest of the children and the family as a whole. I hope to never again need Family or Legal Counsel of this type again, but if I am in need of any legal guidance, whether I am an official client or not, I trust that Emily Smoak would give me honest, fair and professional advice. I would recommend anyone who is going through this type of transitional time of their Family and their lives to work with Emily. In me, Smoak Law has gained one new client and now one more lifelong evangelist. With Emily Smoak, I have gained a trusted advisor as well as a friend!

Do not hire!

Absolutely horrible to work with! I wouldn't recommend her to anyone! Charged me $10,000 for a simple fill in the blank protective order document that was only supposed to take just a couple hours to fill out. She filed this document with false information despite me asking her to fix the mistakes.... She was belittling and bullying to me throughout the couple weeks I tried to use her. It was so bad that I told her that I was thinking of using someone else for my divorce, and she got upset and dropped me for the protective order case which I had a hearing for just a couple weeks later. I had to quickly try to scramble to find a new lawyer and ultimately lost my protective order after having to spend even more money to try to get a new lawyer up to speed and to try to fix her many mistakes. Absolutely a nightmare of an experience! Do NOT use her!

This client came to me after firing one attorney. This was a highly contentious matter. The husband had gotten a temporary protective order and had filed for divorce. She fired her first attorney for not obtaining a protective order using scaldalous information that was not relevant. She was the same with me. It became clear that she wanted to use the protective order process along with salaciaous and unfounded claims to deport her husband. We did succeed in getting her a temporary protective order based upon actual facts. At that point, she grew even more angry because the order was not based on her unfounded allegations. At that point, I could no longer work with her so I withdrew. Yours, Emily

Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community

"As a colleague, I would say that Emily's distinctive feature is that she is very easy to work with. This character trait is essential to being able to settle a case with an opposing counsel generally. In the practice area of family law -- where emotions run high and opposing counsel are ofttimes difficult -- I find Emily's approach to be a breath of fresh air. For that reason alone I think she is an impressive family law practitioner. I have also discussed various cases, colleagues, and court staff with Emily on occasion, and Emily appears to be well versed in family law practice and procedure. Emily is a wonderfully supportive colleague."
