Mr. Reed is a Colorado native, raised in Englewood, and educated first on the East Coast, and then back here in Colorado, graduating with honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Prior to attending law school, he worked for United States Congressman Donald G. Brotzman, as his Legislative Assistant, on Capital Hill in Washington D.C., from 1971 through 1973. Returning to CU, he graduated from law school in 1976.
From 1977 to 1981 Mr. Reed was a deputy district attorney in Colorado Springs, progressing fairly quickly to work with the grand jury and the prosecution of homicides and high profile felonies. Leaving that office in the early 1980's, he was offered a partnership to join the prestigious law firm of Trott, Kunstle, and Hughes, here in town, to handle their litigation section, which he did very successfully until branching out to his own private practice in 1996.
This law practice is focused on Jim's skills as a litigator. His cases have taken him throughout the State of Colorado, handling cases not only in his home town of Colorado Springs, but in the Denver area, Pueblo, Fort Collins, Aspen, Breckinridge, Telluride, Durango, and Eagle County. In his practice he has handled both felony and misdemeanor criminal case defenses at all levels, both federal and State, including homicides, criminal assaults, domestic violence cases, sexual assaults, robberies, drug possession and sales cases, burglaries, trespass cases, DUI cases, vehicular assaults and vehicular homicide, as well as matters before the DMV concerning driver's license suspensions.
Because of Mr. Reed's unique background, his law practice has also included a broad range of civil matters, including corporate and partnership disputes, agency disputes, disputes involving real estate sales and lease contracts, construction defects, civil fraud claims, personal injury lawsuits, slip and fall cases, automobile accident cases, and claims against insurance companies for bad faith claims adjusting. He has obtained both million dollar settlements and jury verdicts for his clients.
At the appellate level, Mr. Reed's civil cases have included cases involving the so-called intra-corporate conspiracy doctrine; the duty of import brokers to correctly file customs paperwork on imports into the United States; the limits to the right of a newspaper to obtain information from sealed records on criminal cases under the First Amendment and Colorado statutory law; the rights of homeowner landlords to sue for damages to their property even though the lease is in the name of their management company and does not name them specifically; and the rights of sub-ground lessees in shopping center master lease terminations.
In his over thirty years as a lawyer, Mr. Reed has taken pride in working hard to help his clients understand their legal rights, and protecting those rights for the people he represents in Court.

My legal problem was a squabble with a neighbor. There were some complexities which I thought Jim handled extremely well, utilizing the most ecconomical and efficient methods to obtain a favorable result.
