also known as JP Prentiss, J.P. Prentiss
JP focuses his practice on family law including: complex dissolution and allocation of parental responsibilities cases, and the modification of previously entered orders. When resolving family law disputes, Mr. Prentiss focuses on crafting resolutions that not only meet his clients’ needs, but also ensures that the best interests of the children involved takes top priority.
Since his admission to the bar in 2005, he has tried over twenty jury trials, handled countless contested motions and other hearings and successfully negotiated settlements in hundreds, if not thousands more.
From an early age JP knew he wanted to continue his family’s legacy as an attorney. His passion for justice and helping those in need has only continued to grow since then. JP grew up in Texas where he attended Southwestern University in Georgetown and earned a BA in history and theater. After college he moved to Denver, working as a theater technician prior to attending the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.
During law school he became a teaching assistant for first year criminal law students, and interned with the Denver District Attorney’s office in both the appellate and juvenile divisions. During his third year, while interning in the juvenile division, JP was recognized by his professors for excellence in Criminal Law drafting and Trial practice. After graduating from law school JP was sworn in as a Deputy District Attorney for Denver where he handled hundreds of cases ranging from traffic and misdemeanor matters to first degree murder.
It was at the DA’s office, while again working in the juvenile division, that JP developed a passion for helping children who have become involved in the justice system. After leaving the District Attorney’s Office, this passion naturally focused his practice on parental responsibility actions where he is able to use substantial litigation and negotiation experience to ensure that cases are resolved and that the best interests of the children involved takes priority. His extensive trial and negotiation experience also benefits his clients in handling financial matters, ensuring the best possible results for clients no matter how big or small their cases may be.
While not helping clients JP spends time with his family, including two biological children, two step-children, and a Shiloh Shepherd named Sif. Mr. Prentiss also sits on the board of Pop Culture Classroom, an organization dedicated to improving literacy through graphic literature and pop culture.

100% Satisfied
JP is a class act all around. He is knowledgable and aggressive while still being classy. JP was honest with me and helped set realistic expectations for what we should or should't do in my case. I had been tangled in a horrific custody battle, off and on for 10 years and JP was finally able to bring...

Not Happy
The first time I met JP Prentiss his dog was in the office and he was more attending to the dog’s needs than paying attention to what I said. Throughout the time he represented me, he barely listened to me (although the dog was not in the office any more), resulting in the superficial and inaccurate...
I did occasionally bring my dog to the office, although I tried very hard not to let her be a distraction. Our office tends to have a pretty relaxed atmosphere and I know that many people loved the fact that we had a puppy in the office. I am saddened to read that you were disappointed. With that said, we haven't had a dog in the office since October of 2018, so I'm curious what prompted this review now. I don't know who you are, because you posted anonymously, but I strive to give every one of my clients individualized and focused attention. I do wish that during our representation you would have mentioned these concerns (I certainly would remember that type of criticism because I do not normally hear it). The list of my clients who leave mid-representation is very small, so I have some idea who you might be, but I certainly try to be receptive to client concerns and none of the clients I can think of seem to match your description of events. I do not offer cookie cutter, one size fits all advice. A large part of my practice is analyzing the underlying data of a case, and from there developing a strategic course of action to achieve my client's goals. There certainly are tools and suggestions that apply to many cases, and that I use often, but each case is unique and has its own challenges. I am sorry that you feel I fell short of providing the level of service that is the norm at Burnham Law. I am proud of the positive outcomes that I achieve for my clients and the successes that I have had. I achieve those results for clients and help guide them through the difficult maze of divorce and child custody. I believe that I do that effectively for all of my clients. Nevertheless, please contact me via email as I would like to discuss your concerns with you and attempt to resolve them.

JP Prentiss
I am very thankful for JP and his hard work on my case! He always returned calls and emails. He answered all my questions and worked with me for a unique situation. He gave an awesome final plea to the court in my behalf and I am very grateful!

Takes care of his client
For two years I tried to refinance my house which I received as part of my divorce settlement. Due to a very uncooperative ex-husband and unwilling mortgage company, I hit many road blocks. J.P. knew how to proceed and the refinance was done within 30 days!

He also worked extremely well with the other party involved and did everything in a timely manner. I was very pleased and will certainly reach out to him in the future...
