Ineffective Lawyer

I believe Stephan Uslan is a nice man who has good intentions. However, he was ineffective as my lawyer. He did not provide critical information that would have drastically changed my decisions and cost me a lot of money and hardship. He was my second lawyer in a contentious custody case with teenage...rs and was not present during the mediation. He "assumed" I knew that I would have to pay 2 years of back child support if I lost. He knew I didn’t have a lot of money and that my goal was to get my kids back. However, I would think this would be essential information to be aware of when deciding if and how to proceed with the case. I was relying on him to not assume anything. I also had to drive an hour to Denver to get this information from him despite hours of conversations on the phone. He also suggested I investigate family therapy programs to recommend to the Child Family Investigator (in September 2023) when a law had been passed in May or June of 2023 which did not allow magistrates to mandate family therapy with kids. Therapy was one of our major goals and we both knew the kids would not attend unless the court mandated it because of the undue influence of their father. When I questioned things he did based on information I received from other lawyers, he sent me the law itself which is not what I am looking for in a lawyer. He told me after a disastrous Child Family Investigator report from a CFI that he chose, that we could move on to a PRE (parental responsibility evaluator). He told me my ex would have to pay for half the PRE which has no financial cost limit. I kept asking Stephan questions to get some direction of the plan, my choices and the possible (likely) consequences of each choice and was getting nowhere with direct answers. It was like he was depending on me to make the plan without all the information or the legal expertise. I had get a $375 consultation with a second lawyer who was extremely direct and informative in order to understand the possible choices laid before me and the consequences of each choice. She suggested I settle because of the kids ages and because the courts in Colorado are not favorable in situations with teenagers where one parent is keeping the kids from another parent. She was the one who told me about the law passed in the summer prohibiting magistrates from mandating family therapy. She laid out a settlement plan which I presented to Stephan and he tweaked it to be more favorable to me. She couldn't take on my case because it would require too much ramp up time and she was already busy. He was good at the negotiation once the settlement started but up until then I felt like I was navigating without a rudder or a compass. It cost me $7K in legal fees over a week to settle. It was only after I settled that Stephan told me that there was a possibility that the magistrate would not have ordered or allowed the PRE in which case my case would have been "screwed."
