My divorce trial was won 11 months earlier when I hired Joe to be my lawyer. Being a former prosecuting district attorney Joe was heads and shoulders above my wife's attorney. He relied on the law and a professional approach while in court. My wives' lawyer took the dishonorable path of character assignation and clever word games. If you believe any judge wouldn't be able see through my wife's lawyers antics after listening for years to such antics then you are sorely mistaken. Joe is also an extremely honest business man. I never felt he was overcharging me or looking for some way to run up his bill. In court when I told my wife's attorney that I didn't bother to check his bills she was surprised and said "you really didn't check his bills" and my answer was "why would I". My guess is that her clients checked on her bills and probably for a good reason. Also, Joe is a gentlemen so if you want a "bulldog" you should hire him. If you want to hire a "pit bull" for a lawyer, well I think judges looked at pit bull lawyers like they look at lawyers whose weapons are limited to character assassination and clever, in their opinion, word games. I was involved in an accident that resulted in ongoing long-term medical care and treatment. The insurance company of the person who hit me offered a settlement that was very low. Their offer did not cover the cost of care I already received nor did it cover the cost of care I was expected to need. My wife and I hired Joe Elio and his team to represent us after my wife sustained injuries in an auto accident that was not her fault. The entire process took us over 4 years, we hired Joe and team `1-1/2 years into the ordeal. Joe's first concern was always my wife's well-being, making sure that she was getting medical treatment and that she was improving. This case and my wife's injuries were a tremendous burden on our family, stress levels were high most the time and we often felt like we'd never get through it all. Over the entire period Joe and team maintained a calm and supportive approach. They continued to tell us that we didn't want to settle until we knew my wife was going to be as good as she could possibly be in terms of recovery. When we finally did reach that point the Law One team became very aggressive with the insurance company. They spent countless hours preparing documents, obtaining expert witnesses, getting my wife through different 'occupational therapy' tests, etc. all the things we were going to need to take this to trial. In the end we were able to settle in mediation. As we went through that process Joe explained that if we were to move on to trial we had a very strong case but out expenses would also rise substantially, going to court isn't cheap. Joe push and push on the insurance company until finally they came up to a dollar amount that we thought was fair. You always want more in situations like this because those you love have been impacted in such a negative way and although I can say I would have loved to get more money too the settlement we obtained was excellent. I can't recommend Joe, James, Jeanine and team highly enough. There is no question what so ever in my mind, if I ever need an attorney again I'm going to Law One. You can see all kinds of fancy lawyer ads on TV or hear fast talking attorneys on the radio but what you really need is an attorney who knows what there doing, is willing to spend the time with you and on your case and most importantly thinks about you as a person rather than a dollar sign. I cannot recommend Joe highly enough. Joe stuck with me through a protracted, complicated, high-conflict case involving a very litigious ex-spouse and children. Nobody wins in these cases but I think the outcome was as good as it could be. * Very easy to work with. Very clear thinker. Very experienced and knowledgeable about the statutes. Very thorough. * Trial conduct was really good - smooth, balanced, and humble. He was able to get his points across clearly without aggravating or alienating the court. He appeared to want to resolve conflict rather than propagate it. I thought he finessed circles around a demonstrative opposing counsel. * Was very diplomatic about driving the case in the most effective way despite my naive attempts to steer it. * In at least two cases I thought Joe was very clever in his trial strategy: * After a very favorable ruling in hearing, opposing counsel continued trying to persuade the judge. Joe did not take the bait but grabbed his things and walked out quickly before the judge could change his mind. * After the court refused a motion for an in-chambers interview with my minor son so that my son could explain himself, the judge railed that my son was not old enough choose his domicile, shouting “if you won't tell him that, bring him in and I’ll tell him myself!” Joe calmly asked what time and date would be convenient for his honor. This move effectively granted the in-chambers interview and in my view completely changed the direction of the case.
