Douglas Todd Cohen

Doug Cohen was extremely helpful in helping me with a citation I (Colorado resident) got in Wyoming. I was found to have a very small amount of marijuana in my car, and Doug helped me navigate the Wyoming court and got me a great deal that ended up being a small fine and some community service hours ...in exchange for a deferred and eventually dropped sentence. He also ensured so I didn’t have to commute from Denver to Wyoming to fulfill my community service hours or any drug testing. Doug is super communicative and, responds quickly to all texts and calls and explains everything really clearly, while also being a really nice person.

I was referred to Doug in July 2022 due to a DUI charge in Cheyenne, WY (Laramie County). Never having any previous charges in my life, and therefore not really knowing the best course of action, I pled guilty to the DUI in my initial hearing. I contacted multiple attorneys in my home town, none of w...hom returned my calls once they learned I pled guilty. So I was in a panic as I had no idea how to navigate the "system" I was dealing with (WY DOT, my mandated ETG tests, my court ordered Substance Abuse Evaluation, etc.). I was finally referred to Doug, and after the experience I had with the previous attorneys, I wasn't expecting much. I told him at the beginning of the call that I had pled guilty, and not only did he spend 30 minutes advising me on that initial call, he advised me that he didn't want to take any money because as I had pled guilty he wasn't sure what he could do! Not something I was expecting at all. However, his assistance didn't stop there. Over the course of the next three weeks, we traded emails (which he always promptly responded to) where he advised me on matters such as: 1) Since it was my first offense, he informed me of WY Statute 7-13-301 The Deferred Conviction First Offender Statute that allows the court to place the defendant on probation, and if/when those probationary requirements are met, the initial charge is dismissed. I made this request and it was granted! I wouldn't have even known to request this were it not for Doug. This likely saved my career as otherwise, I would have had a DUI conviction on my record for 10 years. 2) He suggested I write a letter to the presiding judge, as well as the DA, in advance of my sentencing hearing letting them know it was first offense and why I think I qualified for the Deferred Conviction, which I did. 3) he navigated me through dealing with the Wyoming Dept of Transportation to make the request for a Probationary License, which was granted. This also helped me avoid damage to my career as it allows me to continue to drive to and from work every day. 4) He helped me prepare for my SAT/ASI Evaluation. As a result, I the recommendation I received was for the minimum 8 hour DUI class. During our email correspondence, I again offered to pay a retainer to secure his help, but again, as he felt there wasn't much he could do due to my guilty plea, he wouldn't take it. I can't tell you how impressive this still is to me, especially after my initial attempt to secure counsel. Not only does Doug and his firm come highly regarded by others in he legal profession (the attorney who referred me to Doug is tops in his field in Colorado), I can attest, based on my experience, that he is an honest, ethical person who clearly wants to help.

I was facing a DUI conviction in Weld County, CO. As someone who had never even been arrested in their life, this was extremely stressful, even more so given the permanence of alcohol convictions in Colorado, and the fact that I rely on driving for my employment. Losing my DL would've turned m...y life upside down, and this is for a first offense with no injury or accident. CO does not mess around with this sort of charge, and if I had tried to go it alone I would've faced the full force of the court and DMV. Doug put together a strategy right away, got me started on all the mitigation while we awaited the court and DMV date. He reviewed all the facts (which admittedly did not look good for me, I did about everything wrong on the stop) and was very frank about my chances. This is something I really came to appreciate about his approach: he will give it to you straight and tell you exactly what are facing and what you need to do to get the best possible outcome. He was able to get the blood test result tossed out due to the police misinforming me of the law, and we managed to not only win the DMV hearing, but got the charge reduced to a non-alcohol offense. This combined with the mitigation he had me do, resulted in me being able to keep my license (and my job!), and reduce my probation requirements. This is excellent result, given the facts of the case. I would say he worked a miracle, but really it was just an experienced and skilled lawyer who knew what he was doing.

In January 2021 my husband and I hired Doug Cohen to be our attorney in a very serious criminal case that my husband had been arrested for.
