I am a divorce, marital and family law attorney, and I've been doing this exclusively for nearly 30 years. I began my law practice in the field of commercial and insurance litigation, working for a large Clayton firm and learning all aspects of complex litigation and trial work. Over time, I became interested in family law as a specialty in which I could represent individuals, and be helpful to them at the most difficult times in their lives. I saw this as both challenging and gratifying, and it has been. Since 1989 the focus of my practice has been upon creating unique solutions to difficult problems in complicated divorce cases. Most frequently, my client is the husband or wife in a marriage in which there is a family business or a professional practice, or other significant financial asset or issue. I represent professionals in all fields, business owners and entrepreneurs, CEOs and high level executives of both public and private companies, and the spouses of such people, in divorce cases in St. Louis and throughout the state of Missouri. I represent some of St. Louis' most prominent citizens with utmost discretion and skill. Many of these cases are remarkably complex, yet you've never heard of them.
I have found that most people do not want a contentious and public divorce if it is possible to avoid it; instead, they want someone to discreetly but assertively represent their interests, and to take the time to consider the unique aspects of their own particular case, and to develop a strategy intended to arrive at an agreed-upon solution, all without a trial. Most of the time, I'm happy to say that we are able to deliver such a result. Occasionally however, it is necessary to try the case in court, and I am fully prepared to do so in those circumstances. I write and speak frequently, both locally and nationally, on topics related to such cases. Our firm, Zerman Mogerman LLC, is a leader in family law practice in St. Louis and throughout Missouri, and we are well known by top divorce lawyers in other major cities throughout the United States. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML)) and one of only 100 Diplomates throughout the nation of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers (ACFTL). In 2017, I was appointed to serve as one of six members of the Missouri Commission on the Retirement, Removal, and Discipline of Judges by the Missouri Bar Board of Governors.
In my opinion, participation in high-quality continuing legal education is critical to providing a high-quality law practice. Because of this, I frequently both attend and present continuing legal education programs on all topics related to complex family law cases, the financial issues arising in them, and trial and negotiation skills. Most recently, in both 2015 and 2017 I was one of 48 family law attorneys who attended the Negotiation Skills training program offered by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in conjunction with the Harvard Negotiation Project, in Cambridge Massachussetts, and I co-chair this program of the AAML. I teach every summer since 2012 at the ABA's annual Family Law Trial Advocacy Program in Boulder, Colorado, and for 10 summers now have also taught practical skills to young lawyers at the AAML Institute for Family Law Associates. These experiences allow me to learn the latest thinking and best practices from my colleagues all around the country while at the same time I am imparting what I know to others.
