About Justin

Learn Justin’s areas of practice.

“Justice for all” is my philosophy. I have worked as a big firm lawyer, law professor, and judicial law clerk on the Chicago federal trial and appeals courts. I have been a lawyer since 1999. I also have a PhD from Michigan and advanced degrees from Cambridge and Princeton, as well as my J.D. (summa) from Ohio State Law. I think ordinary people, under-served populations, and small businesses deserve the quality of representation, at a reasonable price, that I gave my former corporate clients. That's why I started the Law Office of Justin Schwartz.

A police officer in a criminal matter once described me as "relentless." I saw that as a compliment. I gave him my card, and he took it. I don't stop.  If there is a viable avenue by which I can get you relief, I will find it and pursue it. I give my clients the time and attention they need and treat them with respect and consideration. I deliver results, not excuses.  I will give you my best.  If you can find a better lawyer at a comparable price, hire him or her.  I'm certain you can't find a more dedicated, creative, and, in fact, relentless, lawyer, at any price. I am here to fight for you.

I provide top-quality representation in criminal defense, civil rights, personal injury, business matters, discrimination cases, family law, and appeals (civil and criminal).  I also provide first rank general legal services in a variety of personal and business issues—litigation, negotiation, and transactions—contracts, wills, incorporation, and the like.

Got Great Results in a Very Difficult Case
I hired Justin to represent a client who was confined indefinitely to a state mental facility after being found not guilty by reason of insanity.. The facility was lying about her mental state and opposing her release. Justin devoted an extraordinary amount of time to her case despite the low fee we were able to pay and he secured the best possible outcome, a conditional release.

Client
Without Justin my parental rights would have been terminated. Without Justin I would still be incarcerated without bail. The court appointed attorney I had in Vermilion County requested a quack Dr Coleman find me unfit for trial and had never even met me. I fired that public pretender and hired Justin who took me into that courtroom and asked all the pertinent questions to prove my fitness for trial that the friend of the court Dr Coleman had never even asked me before submitting false diagnosis. Without Justin, I would have been sent away to the State hospital until becoming "fit" for trial. One is not even permitted to post bail when the Dr Coleman submits his false reports of unfitness. Justin saved me by having me brought in so we could prove the corrupt public defender and the lying shrink were wrong. We did prove them wrong!! Justin also stopped a termination of my parental rights when the public defenders office had actually assisted the State in leading up to that devastation. The judge was determined that day to terminate but Justins defense and arguments were so respectfully, intellectually persistant and patient and the judge miraculously decided that Justins arguments had merit. The corrupt public defenders office has left a horrible mess of my case & the State has resisted providing full disclosure to Justin so he could defend me properly. Despite the many obstacles he prevails. I am eternally grateful for his skills and his character.

Mr.Schwartz is dedicated and gets the job done
Mf Schwartz has been an absalute blessing to our family. His determination to help us was wonderful. Without his help im certain that my husband would have been convicted and sent away for a long long time. He saw that it was clearly a situation that he was being singled out by the authorities.. Thank you mr. Schwartz

One of the best liitgators in illinois. Great consultant.
I was referred to Justin through a legal help site online. Justin was very helpful and courteous. I explained my case involves a family member in a different state. Although Justin could not represent my relative, he recommended a colleague of his in the state where my relative is in need of representation. Im truly grateful for his assistance.

God Is Good
When hiring Mr Schwartz for my son that was being charged with crimes he didn't commit totaling over 50 years in prison. Mr Schwartz believed in him and his representation of fighting the system worked. My son got off with a very light sentence, major charges dropped. Financially he was willing to work out an agreement that fit my needs. Communication was excellent when needed. I am very grateful to have retained him. I know who to Call!

Above and Beyond
We hired Justin to defend my brother who had very serious charges against him. Justin did not only fight for him but got him a deal way better than expected. We didn't have the money to pay up front so he worked out a payment plan we could afford. He will fight for you and your loved one, if it doesn't seem fair he will fight to make it right. If you're in need of a GREAT lawyer to defend you, Justin is the man for you.

He referred me
Although Justin Schwartz was not able to help me himself, he went above and beyond to refer me to a good lawyer in my area. With all due respect to all attorneys, I feel that most attorneys would look the other way when it comes to help someone with a case they are not able to take. I appreciate Justin's honesty and his dedication to try to help someone with a legal issue from out of his jurisdiction. Thank you.

Poly Lives Matter
I hired Mr. Schwartz to help me in an emergency case regarding being unlawfully evicted for my orientations and my disability statuses. I received a letter demanding my removal from a University housing facility within 48 hours of the notice. Mr. Schwartz was the second person I called out of the meeting (the first was family) in which I received the letter and an explanation that the evictions were due to sexual identities that were "not yet accepted as orientations" and to "stop calling them orientations" and my being "too autistic for staff to deal with" (my only crime is asking a lot of questions!). Mr. Schwartz acted swiftly and with fierce gusto, working late into the night corresponding with me and their lawyer. Within 24 hours he got me a week extension on my eviction, and within 48 hours he got the charges completely dropped, otherwise rescinded, and my "punishment" modified to an agreeable level (the university moved me to housing that would have cost me $8000 more per year and waived the fee, talk about an apology for wrongdoing!). While the University, as Universities do, still ended up having me removed from the place I called home and put me on probation status, Mr. Schwartz won me more than I could ever ask for. He took on an institution of higher learning, something most lawyers would never ever touch, because those are cases that "can't be won". Mr. Schwartz sympathized with my situation, and although he knew me (and my penchant for being utterly pesty and asking too many questions) from a prior appeal a couple years ago (which I am retroactively giving 5 stars, although that case is ongoing), he was still willing to work with me. Mr. Schwartz is knowledgeable and more willing to work with a client than any other legal counsel I have ever known, gets the work done and can get it done even on the world's worst anti-due-process time limit. He helped me even though my gender orientation and sexual orientations are abnormal, and we both acknowledged that the latter are not yet protected classes. Mr. Schwartz is also funny. That's not something I would normally write in a review but I feel it's important to say. Mr. Schwartz is not a cold-hearted lawyer like we hear about or see on TV. It is not a bore to work with him. He brings life to the room and life to a case. He makes legal work feel more loving, more approachable, even more human. He pulls the stress right out of the situation and makes the whole process a lot more user friendly. Mr. Schwartz is not just a lawyer. He is a blessing in disguise. He is my savior. He protected me, despite my monetary limitations, because my being put out onto the streets would mean death. I am alive, and I am eternally indebted to him, I feel, even after my actual debt is paid off. In another life, Mr. Schwartz could have been my friend (that's the best analogy I can use). He's just that kind of lawyer. He's the best kind of lawyer. None of the TV/Media stereotypes about lawyers fit him. Mr. Schwartz is an anomaly. If I had to describe Mr. Schwartz in one word, it would be "relentless". Because for Mr. Schwartz it isn't only about getting paid at the end of the day, it's about saving the lives of the downtrodden. I would absolutely recommend Mr. Schwartz to any minority person in a civil suit. Even if you're going up against someone who "can't be defeated" like an institution of higher learning. Even if your minority status involves alternative sexualities, gender identities that may not be understood, or things that just flat out aren't "protected classes". Even if your identity is frowned upon, Mr. Schwartz will work with you. Because Mr. Schwartz has heart, and he is truly relentless.

Hardest working attorney
Mr. Schwartz is professional, patient, and a very knowledgeable lawyer I contracted. Justin is a highly experienced well spoken attorney who goes above and beyond for his clients, and always shares his knowledge of law with me as if I was one of his students. He, in a sense, has inspired me to go back to law school and complete BA so that I could become a well respected attorney just like him.

Recommendation
Justin was a good and attentive lawyer who kept me informed, revived a case over a default judgment, showed resourcefulness and creativity, coming up with approaches few other lawyers would have known about. He defended the estate as fiercely as he did with my cousin (the original client who passed away during the pending case), he wound things up as fast as the court would permit, and in general did a good job.

Civil Litigation
Thanks for the thorough review of my civil matter. Although we could not move forward with a claim, I understand a little more about the legal system. I would definitely consider retaining you if any other circumstances call for your services.

Employment Discrimination Case
I was satisfied with the outcome of my case. I loved Justin's no-nonsense, factual and honest approach. Employment law and especially discrimination cases are complex and confusing. Justin patiently explained all the details, possible outcomes and a viable strategy to adopt. We have decided to settle out of court and successfully negotiated a settlement agreement, which was finalized quickly. I would highly recommend Justin Schwartz.
