Very professionally skilled attorney.

I was charged with a Class X in 2014 and was facing 6-30 years of prison time. Having never been incarcerated, I was an absolute nervous wreck before hiring Mr. Johnson. Immediately after his free initial consultation, I felt like a pressure had been lifted. He was thorough, non-judgmental, and staye...d in contact with me through the whole process, easing my stress and reassuring me that I was going to be alright regardless of the overwhelming amount of evidence presented against me. He was able to work with me on the price and came to a very reasonable compromise. He was optimistic and positive outside of the courtroom but displayed exuberant confidence in front of the prosecution and judge. He had the state prosecutor stumbling over her words a number of times and explored angles of the case that I had completely overlooked. Ultimately, there was far too much evidence to reasonably take it too trial but he was able to get the Class X dropped to a Class 1 and the sentence reduced to 4 months of boot camp instead of prison time. At no time did he seem overwhelmed or stressed. He was prepared and ready to go each and every court date and I believe it made all the difference in my sentencing. I would recommend Mr. Johnson for anyone in a tight situation, no matter the circumstances.

I am Highly Favored He Highly Recommended!!

Back in July 2014 my life was about to change for the worse. I needed a lawyer who would LISTEN/CARE/ AND THEN DEFEND. I searched and found Edward David Johnson III I explained my accusations to him and he listened with empathy. Mr. Johnson has been very understanding in the situation and never once... made me feel like he wasn’t interested. He made me feel like this was just as important to him as it was to me. Mr. Johnson reassured me that he would do what he could to make this as painless as possible. Every time I called for a question or to give him some information, he was available and never made we wait for a call back. The STRESS of knowing you’re future is OVERWHELMING but I put my STRESS and WORRIES in the right hands: God & Mr. Johnson. I would recommend Edward David Johnson III for anyone in need of help. I was very IMPRESSED with the way he handled my case and Remained PROFESSIONAL at all times. Mr. Edward David Johnson III will ALWAYS be in MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS FOR THE REST OF MY FREE LIFE

Protecting Your Loved Ones: My Experience with Attorney Edward Johnson

I want to warn consumers that this firm shows little concern for your incarcerated loved ones, and I believe Attorney Edward Johnson operates as a con artist, motivated solely by financial gain. My fiancé, J. Wiley, entered into a contract with Attorney Johnson on September 12, 2023, for a total fee ...of $15,000 covering four cases—two felonies and two misdemeanors. We made an initial deposit of $2,500 and agreed to monthly payments of $1,000 until the total was paid or the cases were resolved. On January 16, 2024, my fiancé was wrongfully stopped and charged with an additional felony. Attorney Johnson then proposed bundling all cases for a new total of $25,000. We postponed signing any new contract until March 9, 2024, when he assured us that payments for the second contract would not start until the first was fully paid. My fiancé confirmed this, and since he is incarcerated, he authorized me to sign on his behalf during my visit to the office with Attorney Johnson and his paralegal, Midge McCoy. As court dates came and went, we noticed that Attorney Johnson frequently requested continuances instead of filing necessary motions or reviewing case details. We asked him to schedule Zoom meetings with J. Wiley to discuss his case and to file motions for pretrial release. While he arranged some meetings, he failed to address our requests for case details and strategy, and he ignored our inquiries about discovery until I expressed my frustration in person. My fiancé is knowledgeable about criminal law, and we actively researched to stay informed about his defense. Unfortunately, I often received passive-aggressive responses that left us feeling misled about the case's progress. Upon reviewing our contracts, I discovered that instead of the agreed $15,000 for the first contract, it now stated $20,000, with an additional $10,000 for the second contract. Attorney Johnson claimed we were behind on payments, despite our contract indicating otherwise. When I questioned the change in the first contract amount, he insisted it had always been that way, which raised a red flag. Despite this, we continued to make payments, totaling $17,000 over 13 months, putting us ahead of schedule. We repeatedly pressed Attorney Johnson about the lack of filed motions and the stagnation of the cases, urging him to recognize that the cases could be won with the right motions citing relevant case law. I dedicated hours to researching legal precedents and emailing the firm with new information, effectively acting as an unpaid paralegal. I even incurred expenses printing and mailing documents to support my fiancé's defense. Eventually, it became clear that Attorney Johnson was overwhelmed and began pressuring us for more money, despite knowing that finances were not the issue. He misrepresented himself as a trial lawyer, yet his actions suggested otherwise. He seemed more aligned with the prosecution than with defending my fiancé, even undermining him in court. I have requested itemized receipts, copies of the discovery, and other legal documents related to my fiancé’s case, but to date, we have received none of our requests. Edward Johnson lacks the reputation and trial experience he claims, and he misleads clients to secure their business, only to withdraw from cases once he has received substantial payments, often citing excuses like "issues with attorney authority" or "nonpayment." I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau regarding this firm and strongly advise anyone seeking legal representation for their loved ones to avoid Attorney Edward Johnson and his associates. Unless you have money to waste, I recommend steering clear of this firm, as they demonstrate unprofessionalism and a lack of empathy.

Relationship: Opposing Counsel on matter

"I have asked Edward to work on several matters for me. He has appeared on my behalf in two matters in traffic court. One was a matter that required corrections of documents and communication with the Secretary of State. The other case was a DUI In both matters, Edward was on flexible to get to court on last minute notice. He was prepared and knew exactly what documents needed to be executed and filed with the court and sent to Secretary of State. The matter was handled with knowledge and in a very efficient matter. As for the DUI, his breath of knowledge in the area also made for a very professional and aggressive representation and defense of the client. He made sure all points were attended to for a favorable outcome. Lastly, because of my familiarity with work, I asked him to take on one of my clients in a conflict of interest case. He is now the counsel in the case as well. His work has been professional and well prepared, he is always ready for an aggressive defense."

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
