How long does a person usually stay in county jail when they are charged with serious crimes like murder?

Until trial, which in a murder case takes anywhere from 2 years to five or more. Sounds like they could also charge home invasion.

In drug cases, can the defense use how other prior drug cases, similar to their clients, had a lesser sentence?

Talk to your brother's attorney. In answer to your first question, you can't use results in another cases to argue for a lesser sentence.

Yes -- but the state can ask for a continuance. Depends a little bit on whether it is a misdemeanor or a felony,

Very difficult to re-open. Consult an attorney to see if you can get your plea vacated at this point.

It it is a misdemeanor, the statute of limitations is 18 months.
