About Bryan

Learn Bryan’s areas of practice.

I concentrate mypractice in the area of family law with extensive experience involving finances, child custody, and domestic violence.  These areas are often complex and can be very emotional for the parties involved.

For 2012 through 2015, I was recognized by his peers and named a “Rising Star” attorney by Illinois Super Lawyersmagazine, a designation limited to less than 2.5% of lawyers under 40 years of age in the state of Illinois.

I am a board member of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division (2008 – current).  Within the Young Lawyers Division, I serve on the Children’s Assistance Fund Grant Subcommittee, which seeks to provide grants to organizations across the state related to children and law.

I am currently an adjunct professor at John Marshall Law School where I co-teach a course titled “Family Law Advocacy,” which teaches students to effectively and compassionately assist survivors of domestic violence in a divorce or paternity action.  Through this course, I have partnered with Between Friends to offer legal assistance to victims of domestic violence.

I am one of the founding members of the Associate Board of the Legal Aid Society (2010 – 2014), which operates as the legal arm of Metropolitan Family Services.  I previously served as the chair of the Pro-bono Committee. With the assistance of another board member, I implemented a Family Law Mentoring Panel to assist pro-bono attorneys when volunteering their time. I also teach the Simple Divorce Training to pro-bono attorneys with the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services.

In 2011, I volunteered at the Cook County Domestic Violence Court Project to assist victims of domestic violence in obtaining orders of protection.

Great person to have in your corner
I can’t thank Bryan enough. He helped me through the toughest period of my life. I spent 9 years trying to make the best of a bad situation. When I first consulted Bryan, he took the time to understand my unique situation and immediately provided me with great advice. He was honest and forthcoming about what to expect throughout the whole process. He never sugar coated the situation or attempted to sell me on empty promises. Instead, he prepared me for the worst and fought for my rights as a father. His guidance and advice helped me overcome feelings of helplessness and despair during the long process. With Bryan’s help, I was able to secure the parenting time that I desperately wanted and we were able to secure important decision making responsibilities that will ensure my son has a bright future ahead of him. Bryan is an honest lawyer that truly cared about me, my family and the outcome of our custody dispute. I doubt things would have turned out so well had Bryan not been in my corner.

Good listener
Bryan is a talented and experienced family lawyer. He is a good listener and a calming force in turbulent times. He helped me explore all the trade-offs, both short-term and long-term, and helped me make the best decision for my children. In my case, Bryan was faced with dealing with a non-responsive and bullying lawyer, and he helped us maintain both our integrity while still moving the case along. I would recommend Bryan highly, and would encourage you to speak with him in person.

Complicated cases
Bryan Wilson helped our family through a very difficult and unusual series of events in the life of our disabled adult daughter, including a divorce, an order of protection case, and a child custody case. He was extremely knowledgeable about the law in general, and conveyed that information clearly and usefully; but he also was very open to learning about all the nuances of these cases that were far beyond the pale of “normal.” While his chief aim was expert litigation, he and his team also remained empathic to the emotional drain our whole family experienced during these processes. The staff worked together seamlessly when Bryan needed to have coverage for our daughter’s cases. We are grateful for the way this firm, and Bryan in particular, were able to bring successful closure to a very challenging set of circumstances.

Highly professional and knowledgeable
I had a very complex divorce case involving dual proceedings in foreign forums. Bryan and his law firm sorted my issue in literally 3months while my previous attorney cashed my check for more than 1year and did not know what to do. Hopefully I will not need Bryan’s services in the future :), but in the unlikely event that I will - I will most definitely hire him and his law firm all over again without hesitation. I will recommend him and the firm to all of my friends and I am forever grateful for all his hard work on my case!

Highly professional
Bryan is a highly professional attorney. He is very meticulous to details and quick to respond to any communication. Bryan is always willing to help clear ambiguity in laws and understands the emotional distress of clients as he helps them go through the case. at the same time, he is clear on what realities to face and how to prioritize goals. Bryan and his partner Eva have been able to put closure to my case, find all means possible to protect my child, and validate our concerns legally. I'm very thankful for Bryan and Eva.

Not thorough, but kind staff.
I would like the staff and the attorneys I've worked with (Bryan and Jacqueline) outside of the case. Work-wise, I don't think they were very professional or detail oriented. They helped me with a court order protection and divorce with one child and no assets to split. In the beginning, I had let things slide a bit, but I should have seen them as red flags. 1. Bryan asked me to arrive 30 minutes early to the Skokie courthouse, so we can meet, recap, and chat in person for the first time. I was there... but he didn't show up until right before the hearing. 2. Billing is an issue and it's not fair to invoice your client for something that they could have done effectively. I advise for all clients to audit your invoices and make sure it's accurate. Whenever I did ask for them not to charge me to certain action items, they complied, but they never apologized for it. They were only complying just to get by. They admitted that. A. I was invoiced for speaking with Bryan for an hour, but I was on the phone with him for no more than 20 minutes. B. I've spoken to them on the phone many times and emailed many times about my point of views on things and what was most important to me, but they were creating agreements (for both me and my husband to sign) that didn't even include drug tests and/or the court order protection's expiration date. It's like they only added names and dates to a generic template and sent it to me. Why should a client pay for the edits to remind them (about the drug tests and court order protection)? The second time around (months later), we had to create an updated agreement. This time, they did include the court order protection, but still did not mention anything about drug tests. C. They missed a deadline to submit my financial affidavit to the court, and because of there, a string of action items followed. That's neglect on their part and they still charged me for that. They didn't apologize either. gosh, after so many comments I made about the unfair charges, you would think they would pick up their game. D. The other attorney was sending us illegible documents, but no one said anything. They just sent it to me as well. Did I seriously just pay you to review these documents or not review the documents? 3. The staff here is accommodating by email. It's great when you're busy and don't need to chat about everything, but it seems like they forgot how to be thorough and "delight a customer." They would email me documents from the court without any explanation. Maybe in their defense, they're trying to be mindful about accruing my fees... but I'm sure their office can type between 40-60 words per minute. I can type 80 WPM, so I'm not asking for much. It would have been nice to have some blurb in the emails so I can understand what's going on. Legal vocabulary isn't in simple. They know that. They studied for years to do this and passed the Bar examination. For $375 an hour, the minutes used should have been more effective. It felt like I had to do so much work on my end to make sure they were hearing what I needed or they were reviewing my ex's documents. Customers shouldn't have to try to be someone's customer. Again, I liked them, but work-wise, our expectations were not aligned. Maybe if the emails had more detail and they remembered what makes my case special, we would have had a better view of expectations.
