Biography
Mr. Smit is known for giving clients attentive, client-first service, careful attention to detail, and the legal knowledge and experience needed to pursue their goals. He approaches each case with the understanding that listening to the client is essential and that clear, realistic expectations should be established from the outset.
Mr. Smit earned his Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University in 1994. He later graduated from The John Marshall Law School and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1998. Since that time, his practice has been devoted exclusively to family law and divorce litigation. He handles all areas of matrimonial law, including straightforward divorces, complex financial and custody disputes, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, judgment enforcement, pre- and post-decree custody and support matters, domestic violence cases, and parentage actions.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Smit has handled a wide range of challenging matters, including negotiating child support and maintenance awards in high-net-worth cases, valuing and dividing complex marital estates, and enforcing prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. His experience also includes negotiating and litigating complicated custody disputes, including matters involving multiple court-appointed and independent professionals when needed to assess the best interests of the child.
Mr. Smit is a member in good standing of the Illinois State Bar Association and the DuPage County Bar Association, as well as the Family Law Sections of both organizations. He was appointed by the President of the ISBA to serve on the Standing Committee on Bar Services and Activities. He also remains active in the DCBA mentor-mentee program, where he serves as a mentor to a newly admitted member of the Illinois State Bar.
