Stevenson Law Office was established by Mathew Stevenson in 2002 and has been serving Western Montana since.
Mat Stevenson is a Montana Native, born in Great Falls, Montana. He attended the University of Montana, receiving both a B.A. and Masters Degree in History.
He then attended the University of Montana School of Law, graduating in 2002. He currently resides in Missoula-his practice emphasis is on criminal defense, the majority of his cases are in Missoula and Ravalli Counties though his office takes cases throughout the State of Montana.
Mat Stevenson approaches criminal defense from a libertarian political perspective: a belief in minimal government intrusion into individuals lives. He is committed to vigilant defense of constitutional rights generally, and particularly to those he represents. Mat Stevenson and associate attorneys bring a libertarian political philosophy to the practice of law – seeking to minimize – wherever possible – government sanctioning and control of our clients lives.
Mat Stevenson has engaged in private legal practice for over 12 years. Stevenson Law Office specializes in Criminal Defense and DUI, with additional practice areas of Personal Injury, Family Law, Dependent-Neglect, Orders of Protection, Petitions to Reinstate Driving Privileges (re: DUI), and Mediation Services.
From internship with Federal Defenders of Montana (2001), Montana Law Review, Montana Law Review (2002) Assistant Editor, First Attempted Deliberate Homicide case (2003), Oral Argument (appeal) before the Montana Supreme Court (2004), through the present.
Mat Stevenson has appeared before over 30 Judges in Montana State District, and Federal Courts. Overall, he has appeared before over 60 Judges in over 40 different State District, Federal, Tribal, Justice, Municipal, and City Courts throughout Montana, including over 30 cases on appeal, post-conviction, and sentence review. He has worked with (and more often against) over 100 different prosecutors in these Courts: in private practice alone.

My case dismissed
I was incarcerated in the Ravalli County Jail without ever seeing a judge. The Public Defender I had never ever came to see me and even made me miss a court date. I was incarcerated for 73 days without ever seeing a judge. I hired Mat Stevenson, he asked for an immediate hearing and he got my no bond...

Lucky I was referred to Matt
Very satisfied with the out come of my court case. Matt effectively had my charges reduced with minimal fines imposed and most importantly no jail time. I'm from out of state and was allowed to return home based on his efforts at my first court date which had originally been set for October, my accid...

No Prison
I was charged with a very serious felony in Ravalli County, Montana in 2007. I have a minor criminal history and the two other lawyers I interviewed told me I would definitely be going to prison. I hired Mat Stevenson because he was extremely confident that he could get me a sentence that would not r...

Didn’t get the courtesy of a call back
I was very open to engaging his services. I have means where my S/ O doesn’t. Needed a consult on a parole violation. And potentially other matters. He was out of office. Spoke with a female who took the pertinent info down. Said he’d likely call or at least they’d set up a consult in a few ...
My father died on February 7, 2022. I thought this was made clear to Kay at the time she was trying to contact me, and that she took down the one-star review. He died in an assisted living facility in Great Falls Montana. Its really unfortunate that Kay is still taking a toll on my reputation, for being less-than-optimally-available during the days my dad way dying, then tries to tank me with a one-star review, literally on the day he died. Rather vicious, actually. Sincerely- Mat Stevenson
"Mat is diligent, intelligent and committed to his clients. I highly recommend him for anyone's criminal defense needs."
