Attorney Discipline History: 90-Day License Suspension for Professional Misconduct

In 2015, the Wisconsin Supreme Court suspended attorney Christopher S. Carson’s law license for 90 days after he admitted to eight counts of misconduct involving four separate clients. The misconduct included engaging in an improper sexual relationship with a current client in a criminal matter, p...urchasing alcohol for that client despite knowing her bail conditions prohibited alcohol use, and making misrepresentations during the disciplinary investigation. Additional misconduct involved failing to competently handle legal matters for other clients, including not researching or following the proper administrative appeal process in a prison visitation case, filing defective and frivolous habeas petitions in the wrong venue, and making multiple legal and procedural errors that resulted in court-ordered sanctions. The court also found misconduct in Carson’s handling of client fees in a divorce-related matter. He improperly deposited advanced fees into his business account, failed to provide required written notices, delayed addressing a refund request after representation ended, and sent an incorrect and ineffective fee accounting letter. Carson had prior discipline before this case, including a private reprimand in 2008 and a public reprimand in 2009. After reviewing the stipulation between Carson and the Office of Lawyer Regulation, the Wisconsin Supreme Court approved a 90-day suspension effective April 9, 2015.

Excellent Help with a High Conflict Divorce

I was in the middle of a terrible divorce from an abusive spouse diagnosed with several mental illnesses (sociopath). I had been dropped by my previous attorney, being told that they did not have time for my spouses games and tricks or his difficult attorney. Chris took my case when others did not... want to touch it. He was able to get things done. I don't believe that anyone could have made things go faster. He explained my options to me, listened to me, tried to be creative against the crazy arguments coming from the other side, and most of all, fought for me. He stood up for me in court, with confidence. He understood my position, and had compassion. I wish I had found him in the beginning. It would have been an easier job for him. As it happened, he took a really messed up case, and saved my life. Thank you, Chris.

Christopher’s comment:

“I fought for a father to see his children, who were being withheld from him illegally. I brought a motion to enforce placement, on the theory that even without a specific order in place, no parent should simply conceal her children from the father. The mother backed down, but not before her lawyer reported my motion to the Bar. The Bar disagreed with my creativity here, claiming that only specific placement orders can be enforced. Sad.”
