Phillip R. Newman is a Nashville trial attorney whose 30 year career centers on family law and dispute resolution. He handles complex divorces and contested matters—alimony, child custody, child support calculations—and a wide range of post divorce and juvenile proceedings, including modifications, relocations, support changes, and appellate work. He has also litigated personal injury cases. For more than a decade Phil has served as a Rule 31 general civil/family mediator and has mediated about 500 cases, applying practical problem solving to resolve emotionally charged disputes outside court. He was in middle Tennessee’s first collaborative divorce training class and is a regular CLE presenter. Admitted to practice in Tennessee since 1993, he began his career at Manier, Herod, Hollabaugh & Smith, co founded Puryear & Newman in 1997 (now Puryear, Newman & Morton), and is admitted to the Eastern, Middle, and Western federal districts. A Brentwood raised California native, he lives in Nashville with his wife Jude White and sons John Patrick and Joe; he’s an avid runner, sports fan, youth baseball coach, and active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

I never thought I'd need a divorce lawyer but when I found myself pregnant going through a divorce I knew I'd need one that would advocate for me and my baby boy. From the minute I met Phil Newman we just clicked. His warm, caring nature together with his no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase way makes him a...

Phil Newman is an excellent divorce attorney, professional and thorough. He and his team were responsive to all my questions and concerns. I was very pleased with the fair settlement that was reached. He also provided good advice pre and post divorce.

Phil was highly recommended to me by a long-time friend who had recently gone through a divorce and was in a very similar situation to mine. I have two young boys and was the breadwinner in my household, which is very relevant because I had a hard time accepting the role reversal of my situation. I k...

Mr. Newman, his colleagues, partners, and staff assisted me at a time when an unexpected tragedy struck. "I strongly endorse this lawyer. Phil is a skilled advocate, both in the courtroom and during negotiations. The ability to think several steps ahead is an important talent for any family law attorney. Phil is one of the best at this which, in turn, allows him to get good deals for his clients but also puts them in the best possible position in the event a trial is needed. His clients are in good hands,"
"Phil is a well-respected lawyer in the community because he is professional and dedicated to his client's objectives. I have also had the pleasure of working with Phil as a mediator and appreciated his creativity in problem solving."
"Phil is an exceptional attorney. He is well-respected by both his peers and the judges before whom he practices. He is a rare combination of brilliant, compassionate, reasonable, and thorough. It is no wonder he is one of the most highly sought after attorneys and mediators in Williamson County. I wholeheartedly endorse him."
"Phil and his staff really knows their stuff. Both a stellar advocate and mediator, Phil knows when and how to fight, and when it's best to work together. He will tell you what you need to hear, not just what you want to hear. Goes the extra mile for his clients, and professional in dealing with other lawyers. One of the very best!"
