Brand New Permanent US Resident (not US President yet)

Being in fight with USCIS (then INS) for almost 13 years, I used to know many immigration lawyers. Peter is definitely one of the best (if not the very best!) of them. He took over my case about 2 years ago, and solved such difficult problems, others claimed unsolvable. Thanks to him, I can breath...e freely now...

The immigration Lawyer I will recommend

We have been working with Peter for 10 months. We had a tough case. but Peter helped us solve it in a professional manner. He is always receptive and methodical, with a friendly attitude. Finally out case has been cleared. Peter is highly educated about legal immigration issues and in our case h...e has always made the the right decision. He is not a braggart lawyer who makes empty promises, but rather a very methodical and effective attorney.

Great Immigration Lawyer

My wife and I were both on F1 status but since her OPT was coming to an end and since she wanted to keep working, we had decided to start looking for an immigration attorney to apply for the NIW EB2 green card. After reading as much reviews as we could, we had realized that Peter seemed to be the sui...table attorney for us mostly based on his high ranking and success rate. We contacted him and scheduled an appointment to have a face-to-face conversation. Our first impression after the 90 minutes appointment was very positive. He was very patient and knowledgeable and we hired him the day after the appointment. His attorney fee was not the lowest, but he was the only one processing all our documents before submission and, as other reviewers already mentioned, there are no additional fees to be charged besides the one mentioned in the contract. Despite the fact that I was still in the last months of my PhD and I had only 5 publications at that time, Peter was very confident that I had a very strong case and he was absolutely right. The I140 was approved in about 9 months after submission and we received our green cards 3 months later. This process went extremely smooth and painless for us and we are really grateful. The only downside in our experience was the total price which was high. Since we wanted to keep working, we both had to apply for the EAD card, which require signing a separate contract with its own fees. People should keep in mind that those prices do add up and it can make a significant difference if you don’t budget for it in advance. Besides that, we had a great experience with this law firm. We strongly recommend the Messersmith Law firm for anyone who is a looking for a great immigration attorney.

Knowledgeable and Responsive!

Peter Messersmith was very responsive and knowledgeable and first introduced me to the concept of the national interest waiver when most other lawyers easily dismissed my case because I didn't have as many published articles. Peter took the time and patience to understand my situation and realized th...at it had a lot of merit! After a lot of work putting all the documentation together, I am pleased to say that I received my green card a few months later. Thank you Peter!

Peter is a terrible lawyer who only wants your money

I give the Messersmith Law firm a zero rating. They have ruined my life. These people don't care for their clients and for the repercussions of their negligence on the clients' lives. They are a money eating machine and are happy as long as you keep feeding them. I approached Peter for a green card a...pplication. He told me that he was confident that he could get me a green card in both the EB1 and EB2 categories. I had a paid consultation with Peter where he convinced me that getting a green card was the way to go. He gave me vague answers during this consultation as well as throughout the process. But not knowing anything about immigration law myself, I signed Peter up as an attorney for my EB1A petition. The moment he received the money from me, he sent me file with examples of recommendation letters and a document list. However, most of the recommendation letters were not pertaining to my field of work. Peter did not give me any guidance about how to write these recommendation letters and on what sort of letters would improve the chances of my petition being accepted. He didn't draft a single recommendation letter for me. Most of the time, he gave one sentence or sometimes, even one word suggestions about the recommendation letters. Once all the money was paid, he almost didn't care about my case. He would never tell me clearly what documents he needed from me. I submitted all the documents by email. But then he wanted me to print them all out and mail them to him (even though he charges $300 for mailing, copying, etc.). He told me that he would charge $300 upon completion of the case. But he immediately charged me $300. I have been to the post office several times because of Peter's miscommunication. The worst thing is that Peter blatantly refused to send me copies of the write up for my own case! He didn't even tell me which documents he was submitting to the USCIS on my behalf. Upon receiving an RFE for my case, I asked Peter for a copy of the documents that he had submitted. He still refused to give me a copy of the write up. But he reluctantly gave me a password-protected file of my own documents that he had submitted prior to receiving the RFE. After examining this, I noticed that several important documents which would point out the significance of my work (such as a book chapter, conference presentations and a letter from the editor of the journal JBC) were out of place and one letter which Peter said would harm my case and hence should not have been included was included in this document list. When I brought these issues to this notice, he didn't even have the courtesy to apologize for his mistakes. His paralegal Jen also made several mistakes on the important I-140 and I-485 forms. After receiving the RFE, I wanted to discuss about the write up and documents with Peter before he submitted them. However, Peter submitted these without my knowledge and I don't know till date what he has submitted on my behalf to the USCIS and how he has presented my case. My green card was finally denied. I am broke and have no more money to refile. I have to leave the country and my postdoc position at a prestigious institute in two weeks time. Peter does not care about your case. He will try and talk you into signing up with him. He will try and convince you to keep paying for all of his services that are conveniently not mentioned in the contract. After living in the US legally as a responsible citizen for over 12 years, being a Summa cum Laude undergraduate and graduate student and getting a PhD, I have been given 2 weeks to pack and leave this country. I would never want anyone to be in my position. Please hire a good reliable lawyer and stay as far away from Peter as possible

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
