David is a hybrid specialist in both criminal trials and criminal appeals. He is one of just a handful of lawyers in the country who is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in criminal trial law and in criminal appellate law. He carries a third board certification in criminal trial law from the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA). David represents people of all backgrounds and ages at all phases: pre-charging investigations, pretrial discovery, trials, sentencing, probation violations, direct appeals, postconviction appeals, and collateral appeals. David has unique experience representing people who were convicted of first-degree or capital felonies committed when they were children. David works with experts in areas like child psychology, neuropsychology, trauma, and prison adjustment. David secured new and reduced sentences for 18 people previously convicted of capital crimes and other serious felonies and who were sentenced to life without parole as children. David assembles and leads teams of experts and investigators to advocate for his clients in new sentencing hearings. David's work has reunited families, securing immediate release from prison for 10 people serving life without parole sentences. David also represents people who were wrongfully convicted because of mistakes their trial lawyer made. David has won new trials for people serving life sentences for capital or life felonies. David has called on experts in psychiatry, emergency medicine, orthopedics, firearms, and ballistics to prove his clients were wrongfully convicted. In his trial work, David has won acquittals in jury trial prosecutions in different parts of Florida for clients charged with Life, F1, F2, and F3 felonies.

David has spent half his legal career in private practice and half in government practice. Ask if your lawyer is board certified by The Florida Bar or the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Established in 1982 by the Florida Supreme Court, board certification helps consumers identify specialists in various areas of law.

From David: My goal in every case is to protect my client from further harm and to win by all available means within the bounds of the law and rules of professional conduct. This approach, particularly in life-and-livelihood threatening felony cases, requires long hours of meticulous preparation and investigation, strategic planning, and time-consuming research and writing of motions and legal briefs. My code is this: "I shall defend each client as though tomorrow will be judgment day and I would be content to be judged on that defense alone."

What is Board Certification?

Board certification recognizes attorneys’ special knowledge, skills and proficiency in various areas of law and professionalism and ethics in practice.

Established in 1982 by the Florida Supreme Court, board certification helps consumers identify specialists in various areas of law.

Board certified Florida Bar members are allowed to identify themselves as “Board Certified,” or to use the letters “B.C.S.” for Board Certified Specialist on business cards or letterhead, in legal directories or in is The Florida Bar’s highest level of evaluation of the competency and experience of attorneys in the 27 areas of law approved for certification by the Supreme Court of Florida.

Board certified lawyers are Evaluated for Professionalism, Tested for Expertise.

By the numbers:

As of September 1, 2022 there are over ninety thousand lawyers eligible to practice law in Florida. Only four hundred and nineteen lawyers are Florida Bar Board Certified in Criminal Trial Law. In addition, only forty-three lawyers are Florida Bar Board Certified in Criminal Appellate Law. Mr. Redfearn is one of just eight lawyers double board certified by The Florida Bar in both specialties.

In addition, Mr. Redfearn is one of just nineteen lawyers in the State of Florida who is Board Certified in Criminal Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, an American Bar Association accredited lawyer certification program recognized by The Florida Bar.

Mr. Redfearn formerly worked as a public defense lawyer (2006-2008; 2015-2022). As of August 2022, he is available to hire for legal representation. Please call the Longwell Lawyers law firm to schedule a free in-person consultation or phone call.

Excellent legal representation
David Redfearn took my case to court, like I was his relative or family friend. After serving twenty-two years in prison, I had low expectations for any kind of relief. My case was a juvenile resentencing under Miller/Kelsey/Waiters. Mr. Redfearn took the time to read through decades of transcripts, demonstrating his familiarity with every minute detail through intelligent questions and sound strategy. Mrs. Bacal, who worked with Mr. Redfearn on my case, spent countless hours gathering documents, interviewing relevant people, myself included, to present a thorough and comprehensive case to the court. Both took special care to accommodate my large family, ever patient, and to be receptive and attentive to them all. David Redfearn and his team went out of their way to provide council one might expect only from a dream team of attorneys, accessible only to the privileged few. In fact, Mr. Redfearn served as a public defender at the time. This is unheard of in the Florida legal system. Mr. Redfearn is a hard-working, diligent attorney who treats his cases with special care, even in his role as a public servant. That kind of integrity can’t be bought at any price. I recommend David Redfearn to anyone in need of legal services who wishes to be represented by someone who will treat their case with the care and seriousness they will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. My gratitude cannot adequately be expressed in this or really any other format. Nevertheless, thank you Mr. Redfearn. There is just no way to say it enough.

The best
If you acquire this man to defend you you are favored by having him . He is excellent in his work and does the job as if he is in peril himself. I think he is judge material.

I wish i met My lawyer six years sooner
David is not just a lawyer he has become my friend. You will never meet any Lawyer who cares as much or is more passionate about helping people. While working my case it was not uncommon for him to call me at eight or nine o'clock at night cause he was still in the office working for me. I also felt his grasp of the law as it pertained to my case was superb as he corrected for me items the police told me were factual but we're falsehoods, and that knowledge got in my case many erroneous charges dropped out right. The best proof I can give to anyone looking for a lawyer that you have found the right person in David is he continues to check on me over a year after my case and was there even after the gavel came done to help me threw the entire process . I have recommended him to my friends and will continue to do so. I wish I know him years ago. He has quite literally saved my life!

Sexual Battery FELONY Charge : Not-Guilty Jury Verdict..
Thank You Sincerely Mr. Red earn, from myself, family and friends. I am hard pressed to find the words that would best describe David's hard work ethic, vast Criminal and Case Law knowledge, Determination and Perseverance; while still maintaining professionalism and mannerism to all parties involved in a high profile Criminal/Felony Trial. From the initial time of my arrest and charge, David was there to help; even before any retainer or fee was discussed or submitted. During a 22 month Trial process, David pursued EVERY single aspect and avenue from the Discovery phase, compiling evidence, deposing key witnesses, documented factual data, creating visual aids and timelines, then wrapping all this information into a strategically planned Trial vs. the State of Florida. David worked cohesively, but aggressively with the State of Florida Attys Office, Assistant Prosecutor; to push this case thoroughly and methodically thru every step of the Court process, pursuing a successful Trial. David never failed to greet family, friends and myself when meeting with him on Court Dates; providing personal comfort and reassurance in a time of despair. On another note, David was always sure to present all Legal aspects and issues of the case to myself as his Client, In Privacy, giving ample time for my case decisions without sway. Mr. Red earn would be my ONE and ONLY recommendation to anyone facing Legal adversity and seeking that highly intelligent, Law knowledgeable, hard working, never quitting and very powerful Attorney. I can honestly say that I have personally and professionally trusted Mr. Red earn with 'The State of My Life's affairs', prevailing the State's Prosecution with a Jury Ruling of NOT-GUILTY . I now consider David my personal Friend. An unmeasured thanks again to David and his Legal Team. A job well done that has regained my Life's direction focus. -DM

Happy Customer
Mr. Redfearn did an amazing job with my misdemeanor case and was able to help me years later with paperwork issues from that same case after I misplaced my copies of court documents. Very happy with his professionalism and level of customer service and would certainly recommend him to anyone needing legal help.

Comforting in an uncomfortable situation
As a young physician facing a medical malpractice lawsuit, I did not know what to do or what to expect. I learned about Mr Redfearn via a colleague of mine, during our first interview he explained the nature of the process and what to expect. Following this he contacted all the involved parties, gathering information in a throughout fashion while setting the wheels of what it is a long process. He has been available to answered all of my questions, showing outstanding professionalism. I recommend Mr Redfearn without reservations.

"I could go on at length about David's tireless devotion to his clients, his passionate belief in the protections and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution, and his voracious appetite for work and preparation. However, allow me to say this - people often ask me who I would hire if I got into trouble with the law, and I tell them David Redfearn."
Criminal defense Attorney | Nov 24
Relationship: Co-worker
"David is a dedicated trial lawyer who loves being in the courtroom. I have seen many lawyers in action over my 16 year career and I believe David is one of the best. His tireless preparation and trial advocacy skills make David the only choice when it comes to hiring criminal defense counsel. I do not say this because David is a partner but rather based on earned respect for performance when it counts the most - at trial."
