Biography
Carey D. Carmichael, Jr. is the owner and manager of Carmichael Law, PLLC in Lake City, Florida. As a former Assistant State Attorney, a former Assistant Attorney General, and a former Assistant Public Defender, Carey’s primary focus has been criminal law for the last two decades. Carey became board-certified by the Florida Bar as an expert in Criminal Trial Law in 2019.
Carey graduated from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After college, Carey worked full-time while attending graduate school, and in 2002, Carey earned a Master of Business Administration. Carey graduated from law school in May 2006 and was admitted to the Florida Bar in September 2006. Carey accepted a position as an Assistant Public Defender in the Third Judicial Circuit in Lake City, Florida. Carey left the Office of the Public Defender in 2011 and moved to Tallahassee, Florida; accepting a position as an Assistant Attorney General. In 2012, he returned to Lake City as an Assistant State Attorney for the Third Judicial Circuit. He held this position until the end of 2017. Carey opened and managed his private practice from 2018-2022; and returned to the Office of the State Attorney from 2022-2024.
During his time as a prosecutor, Carey was directly responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and making filing decisions on over 5000 cases. Carey prosecuted every type of case imaginable, including capital felonies, fraud, DUI manslaughter, home invasion robbery, crimes against law enforcement officers, drug trafficking, crimes against children, and many more. In addition to his own caseload and work in trials, Carey was frequently called upon to supervise and train other attorneys in trial techniques, case analysis, research, and trial practice. From 2022-2024, Carey was a supervisor with the Office of the State Attorney, and was a member of its Special Prosecution Unit, focusing primarily on the prosecution of homicides, child pornography, and child sex cases. Carey returned to private practice in 2024.
Carey served as a Commissioner on the Third Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission. He was nominated by the Florida Bar and appointed by Governor Rick Scott for a three-year term beginning in 2015. In 2018, Governor Scott reappointed Carey to the Judicial Nominating Commission for an additional term, Since 2023 Carey has been a member of the Third Circuit Grievance Committee.
