Disengaged, ineffective and lied about an intern not using billable hours
Hired Jonathan Dunn for a custody case. When I hired him, I asked what the billable rate for his paralegal would be. He responded that his paralegal was a legal intern and typical paralegal work would not be billed. Not only did I not get paralegal rates but he had neither and billed at his rates ...
This case was resolved by consent order. Chris' failure to comply with the Court's orders or fully apprehend the significance of his contumacy presented challenges, but the case was utlimately reolved by terms requested and approved by the client. The firm was fortunate to have a summer intern during a portion of Chris' case who was able to do work for which the client was not billed. This was not in effect for the duration of the representation--as is the case with summer interns. I am glad that we were able to pass some of these savings on to Chirs, and I am pleased that we were able to attain a final disposition that met with his approval. Of course, Chris was free to seek counsel elsewhere or dismiss the firm if he had the slightest reservation about the calibre of his representation. His decision to keep the firm on retainer throughout the pendency of his case speaks volumes, and we are pleased that the matter was resolved by terms agreeable to all parties.
