The store clerk said Johnson sauntered over to a coffee machine, where he made a cup of jav ... a. In the process he left incriminating fingerprints in a cardboard sugar container. A store videotape showed Johnson going to the counter with his coffee, and handing the clerk a dollar to pay for it. But when the clerk opened a cash register drawer, Johnson turned menacing. He lunged for the money in the drawer, and Byrd quickly tried to close it on his hand. Johnson spit out an obscenity and threatened to "blow (clerk's) head off" if she didn't stop resisting. But he never displayed a gun. Johnson grabbed the $40 that was in the cash drawer, picked up his hot coffee with one hand, and scurried out of the store. Later, someone would call the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office to identify him after a local television station broadcast Li'L Cricket's video. The clerk picked Johnson out of a photo lineup.
