Outstanding and knowledgeable expert!

I cannot say enough good things about David. I read about him in a report on asset forfeiture and decided to call him to see if he would help me. I had spoken with many other attorneys regarding this topic and they all had really no idea how asset forfeiture worked in real terms or what strategies co...uld be employed. I was at my wit's end as I felt I had no where to turn and was being completely taken advantage of by the government. Within a one hour conversation, I learned more from David than I had from all of the other conversations I had combined. He is direct, honest, and no nonsense. He doesn't try to get you to hire him; he simply does what you need him to do, give you advice. If you decide to hire him he is a wonderful advocate. He doesn't waste time having to research and consult, unless necessary, and so you don't incur unnecessary costs. He is that good and knows what he is doing. He is a terrific advocate and I recommend him without reservation.

"David Smith is a nationally known criminal defense lawyer with a specialty in asset seizure and forfeiture defense. He literally wrote the two volume book on civil and criminal forfeiture. He also helped achieve badly needed, major forfeiture reform by his work in furtherance of the Civil Asset Forfeiture Reform Act ("CAFRA"). There is no one who is more knowledgeable, experienced and accomplished in this area of the law. Plus he's a very nice man, freely shares his unparalleled expertise, and is a lot of fun to work with."

"David Smith is among the best informed and intelligent lawyers that I have ever known. I have always been impressed by his diligence, knowledge, and advocacy for his clients. He is not only an excellent criminal defense and appellate attorney, but his expertise in federal forfeiture and RICO law is unsurpassed. He is suitably the author of the leading treatises on these subjects."

Relationship: Worked together on matter

"I had the pleasure of working with David on a criminal matter in the Eastern District of Virginia in 2014. David is an exceptional attorney with amazing attention to detail. He was a pleasure to work with throughout the course of our representation of a mutual client (which ultimately resulted in a pre-indictment dismissal). David is well respected on both sides of the aisle and I endorse him without reservation."

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
