A federal investigation or indictment is usually the hardest thing a person or company has ever faced. My job is to absorb that pressure, explain what is actually happening in plain English, and build a defense that protects your freedom, your finances, and your reputation.
I have been practicing law since 1986 and running my own firm in downtown Washington since 1991. Most of what I do is federal white-collar defense: responding to grand jury subpoenas, handling Department of Justice investigations before charges are filed, defending clients at trial when charges cannot be negotiated away, and arguing for the lowest possible sentence when a resolution is reached.
The people who hire me are often professionals, business owners, and public figures. Over the years I have represented a Member of Congress, senior executives at national companies, entrepreneurs, elected and political officials, and professional athletes. I treat every matter with the same discretion regardless of whether the client's name has ever appeared in the news.
Before I went into private practice, I served as an Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia and as a staff attorney at the U.S. Department of Commerce, representing what is now the Bureau of Industry and Security. That government experience informs how I read an investigation from the other side of the table.
