“When ‘Winning’ Your Divorce Costs You Six Figures”

I was involved in a divorce case where litigation strategy prioritized procedural wins over economic outcomes. In January 2025, the marital home was valued at $370,000, and a negotiated buyout at fair market value was on the table. Instead, the matter proceeded toward an open-market sale. The home... ultimately sold for $285,000, and after transaction costs and mortgage payoff, the net proceeds were dramatically lower than what would have been achievable through negotiation. The case left me questioning whether clients are always being guided toward strategies that maximize their financial outcomes, versus strategies that simply prevail in court. Future clients may want to ask detailed questions about cost-benefit analysis before pursuing prolonged litigation.

Set your expectations

I chose this firm because of its convenient location and felt optimistic at first. Communication started off well, and I was initially given hope for a favorable outcome based on my circumstances. However, over time, the direction of the case seemed to shift, and I felt less supported as things progr...essed. Mediation did not go as I had expected, and I ultimately accepted a settlement that left me with significant lifestyle changes.

Peace of Mind

I reached out to Gwen and from the first interaction, I was put at ease. Gwen and her entire team, Melissa, Carolyn, and others - are equally as kind, prompt, competent. I was informed of the process, I was kept in the loop at every turn, and I knew I could rest easy because Gwen was on my team.

Truly Amazing!

You are going to read this review and wonder why someone would take the time to write this much about an attorney that they hired to do a job for them, and the answer is, because they impacted my life in such a way that I know God must have directed me to them. First, I am a single father. I was ...unsatisfied with the custody arrangement I was in and I decided I would go back to court for a modification. This was a tall order. I work with prestigious lawyers regarding business, both domestically and internationally and I asked for advice on finding the right lawyer for this uphill battle. Their recommendations led me to Gwendolyn McLeod at Haspel & McLeod in Frederick. Their office is conveniently across the street from the courthouse steps. When I walked into her office and went through the scenario with her and her team, they immediately took the enormous pile of concern and pain that I walked in with, that was breaking my back, and they put it on their capable shoulders. I left knowing I had a chance and I felt empowered; a single father fighting for his kids, and I felt empowered. It has been nearly a year and half after walking into their office, because of several court delays. I walked out of the courthouse after a fierce battle with a ruling that I could only have dreamed of; full physical and legal custody of my children. I literally walked into their office after the trial was over and cried with her as we called my family to deliver the incredible news. I have never seen a more competent and fearless attorney in my life. She is fierce...I mean intelligently and purposefully FIERCE in action. The emotion I felt as she did her work in the courtroom had me pinching myself because I was so overwhelmed at how she controlled the room. She respects and is given respect. She has a wonderful team that works with her to support the process and leaves no stone unturned, which is what you need when you take on a fight of this importance. I have recommended and will recommend Gwendolyn McLeod to anyone who wants a fighting chance to really win. That's it .... and hopefully she will read this and hear me say it again, "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" I simply can't say it enough.

Recommendation for Gwen McLeod

I would highly recommend Gwen. She is an excellent lawyer in terms of her knowledge, as well as, her compassion. She fought for everything I wanted and won!! I'm very glad that she was my lawyer and not my ex-husband's!

"I endorse this lawyer's work. Ms. Mcleod is a strong advocate in the courtroom where it counts the most. She fights hard for her clients, is organized and effective. I have seen her in court and I have represented her clients when they have been charged criminally; they LOVE her. Ms. Mcleod is a domestic attorney; however, she knows how to protect her clients when it gets dirty. Unfortunately, false accusations are made and clients get arrested. She will not let her clients down. She is a criminal attorney's dream with respect to being prepared, available and having done what was necessary to protect the client who has become a criminal defendant. She grabs her successfully argued Protective Orders, transcripts of contempt hearings, depositions, - everything needed to assist her client who is now enduring the added burden of criminal court . As tough as she is, and as strong as she sounds, she is also a kind and compassionate attorney. She deserves the respect she has earned."
