Mr. Butterman is a seasoned trademark attorney and former Attorney Advisor in the trademark examining operations of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. At the USPTO, Mr. Butterman worked in one of the Law Offices that specialized in cosmetics, toiletries and cleaning preparations, publications and office supplies, toys and sporting goods, plus a variety of different services. Both before and after his experience at the USPTO, and prior to joining the general practice firm of Dunlap Bennett and Ludwig, Mr. Butterman worked as an associate in several intellectual property specialty law firms and in the in-house legal department of a major international hospitality industry corporation counseling a wide variety of large and small businesses in both domestic and international trademark clearance (selection), prosecution, maintenance, protection, enforcement and transactional matters. Mr. Butterman’s work experience also covers unfair competition and copyright prosecution and transactional matters. During law school, Mr. Butterman interned in the copyright administration department of EMI Music Publishing.
Mr. Butterman’s law school endeavors featured an appointment as the Executive Notes and Comments editor of the New York International Law Review and the publication of his article entitled, “Baseball’s Anti-trust Exemption and an Owner-Imposed Salary Cap: Can They Coexist?” in an entertainment and sports law journal of the American Bar Association.
In addition to membership in the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Alex Butterman is an active member of the International Trademark Association participating in several of its committees for the past two committee terms. Mr. Butterman focuses his practice on all areas of foreign and domestic trademark law, copyright practice and unfair competition.
