Marc William Miller

We used Mark several years ago for a house purchase. He was recommended by my husbands office. It was difficult to get a hold of him and most times ended up speaking with his staff who were wonderful. The afternoon before the sale I get a call that there is money owed on the bill that needs to be fi...gured out before the sale the next day. I was out of town stuck in a hotel room and my husband was busy at work until late. After telling us that if this can’t be figured out the sale will be delayed I got furious. This man’s advice on buying a home caused us to lose the sale because we added stipulations for negotiation purposes that the seller declined and put the house back on the market. The second home had its issues with the sale but we were desperate and didn’t want to lose this house too. Overall I had problems with his lack of transparency and the fact he dropped a bomb the day before a sale saying we owed him an additional $8,000 dollars when he never provided any warning or documentation for the bill. It was pay up or you don’t get the house. Im surprised he is still allowed to practice.

When I bought my first home, I hired Marc Miller to be my attorney. The crooked seller did the final walk-through with me before closing. My buyer's agent/realtor with Blue Moon Realty (in High Falls, NY) should've been there, but she chickened out because it was raining. She made sure to show up at ...the closing later that morning to get paid, that's for sure. During the walk-through, the seller quickly turned on and off the thermostat; just long enough for me to hear the heat kick on. Then she turned the thermostat back off quickly, saying something about conserving fuel. Convinced that there were no problems, I went to the closing. Afterwards, I returned to my new house, and turned up the thermostat. Huge plumes of black smoke and carbon monoxide came out of the vents. The heat exchanger had broken. I had to suddenly had to come up with $6,500 for a new furnace - after spending nearly everything that I had to buy the house. I called my real Marc. He wasn't in the office so I left a message. Marc blew me off and wouldn't return calls or emails for two weeks. I finally called again and got him on the phone. He told me that because I didn't "catch" the furnace problem at the home inspection, or during the final walk-through, that it was "my red wagon", as he put it. The seller had fraudulently covered up the problem, and my home inspection had been done two weeks prior, when there wasn't a problem (yet) with the furnace. Marc Miller lied online and said that I never was his client, he's full of it. He doesn't care because he got this money at the closing and doesn't want anyone to know that he screwed me over. There was plenty that he could've done to have my back. He completely blew me off and dismissed me. It turns out that Marc has a poor reputation among the locals. He cares about closing the deal and making a fast buck, that’s all.

I regret having used Miller as our lawyer. Their office was really disorganized and this caused multiple issues and headaches for us. They drew up power of attorney papers for us so that I could close on our house alone without my husband physically present (he has a small business and lost hours wou...ld have been expensive). We got them electronically notarized and according to my email records, I sent them to their office on Thursday Nov 12. We were set to close on Tues Nov 17 at 3pm, but it wasn't till the morning of the closing day on Nov 17th that they sent the power of attorney papers to the bank and title company, and learned that there were issues with the power of attorney documents and we couldn't use them. Long story short, the only way we were going to close as scheduled, was if my husband drove from his work from NYC into Kingston where the closing was (this is 2+ hours each way). So my husband ended up doing this because delaying closing would have potentially been very expensive, but it was extremely stressful and costly for him to have to cancel all his meetings and come up in the last minute. What makes me most angry is that Marc would not take responsibility for any of this, originally saying something like, "we only got the papers in on Monday and my assistant was out that day" (um- even if that were the case, that is no excuse, and at any rate, I later checked and saw that I had actually sent the papers Thurs Nov 12 so there was PLENTY of time to look for issues). At another point on a call with my (very upset) husband, he made excuses for their mistake by saying "the rules keep changing" (um, that is what we are paying you for! To KNOW THE RULES, otherwise known as LAWS). His excuses actually kept shifting, and I think this was because ultimately he had no good reason for the mistake.  The mistake was very stressful and costly to my husband's small business, but I understand that mistakes get made. What was unforgivable was the lack of owning up to the mistake. It just showed a complete lack of integrity. If he had at least apologized, or better yet, offered some kind of discount for the mistake they had made, I would have let it go, and I would not be writing this review. I actually hate writing negative reviews for people, but I just feel that people should know what they are getting into when they decide to do business with this office. Side note: there were actually several other mistakes as well (misspelling my husband's name multiple times, including on the title certificate, even after I had corrected them early on) and also a detail in the wording on our rider that I had to correct several times. They are just not very careful. Obviously this is NOT something you want in your lawyer. To top it off, I later learned from our real estate agent that his fees were actually higher than other real estate lawyers in the area. So avoid this lawyer unless you are prepared to worry and watch over all the details and keep on top of things for them (and pay more for it).

As first time home buyers, Marc Miller and his staff held our hands us throughout the entire process from start to finish. His work was very professional and thorough and as a result our closing could not have gone smoother.
