Fair and Knowledgeable

As an advocate for my daughter, Michelle was very well-prepared and honest regarding visitation issues. She was a good listener, especially when it came to figuring out what my daughter really wanted to communicate vs. what she was told to say by her mother. My attorney was as impressed as I was at... Michelle's experience and expertise in dealing with children.

Excellent Lawyer for My Son

I don’t usually post reviews but I wanted to share my experience with Michelle Bermel who was assigned to be my son’s lawyer during my divorce last year. He is mildly autistic and doesn’t do well with strangers and I was worried about how he would react to this difficult situation. In a nutshell, Ms.... Bermel was extraordinary. She visited our home on two separate occasions and spend over an hour each time getting to know my son and making him comfortable enough to speak with her. She even agreed to hold his pet snake and that was an incredible icebreaker. In court it was obvious that Ms. Bermel was very in touch with what was best for my son in terms of visitation, school and vacation times. A year later my son still remembers the lady who visited him that he thinks of as his friend. Thanks, you, Michelle Bermel.

A Force for Your Children

If you are facing a contentious custody situation, you need an immovable force who will stand up for your children when neither parent can see past their own rage. Michele Bermel was precisely that advocate for my kids. My spouse did everything in his power to sway all legal forces against me, incl...uding using his business relationships. Michele made sure her clients - my kids - were protected from his attempts to manipulate them. Take her hand, trust her decades of experience, and rest easy knowing your children are in the care of the absolute best in the field.

A Masterclass in Advocacy: Why Michele Bermel Is Westchester and Putnam’s Most Trusted Attorney for Children

When navigating a high-conflict divorce, it is easy for adults to lose sight of what matters most. In these tragic situations—where parents often seem to hate each other far more than they love their own children—having an unwavering, highly capable advocate in the child's corner isn't just helpful; ...it is vital. Michele Bermel has served as that crucial shield for children for over three decades, standing as one of the most respected, lauded, and sought-after attorneys for children (formerly known as law guardians) across Westchester and Putnam counties. It is predictable that in highly contentious custody battles, one party inevitably emerges feeling like the "loser." Incapable of taking responsibility for their own actions or accepting an outcome that didn't go their way, disgruntled ex-spouses frequently seek scapegoats. They lash out at the legal system, the judges, and, most aggressively, the child's advocate. A recent bitter rant resurfacing a decade after a finalized divorce is a textbook example of this displaced anger—and frankly, raises serious questions about who stands to gain today from attempting to undermine a stellar professional reputation. Here is a clear, fact-based refutation of those baseless grievances and a reminder of why Michele Bermel remains the gold standard in child representation. Claim by Disgruntled Parent The Reality & Michele Bermel’s True Record "She aligns with the higher-earning spouse for money." Total Focus on Children, Not Adult Fees: Michele Bermel retired from representing adults in divorce specifically to escape adult financial games. She dedicates her practice exclusively to child advocacy. Her fees are ordered by the court according to law, and her allegiance belongs solely to the best interests of the children—never the deepest pocket. "She was just friends with the judge / biased." Unmatched Professional Respect: Being highly requested by the bench and trusted by courts across two counties is not "cronyism"—it is the direct result of 30+ years of flawless integrity, sharp legal acumen, and proven reliability. Judges rely on her because she delivers objective truth, not emotional theater. "She manipulated the kids behind closed doors." Shielding Children from Parental Alienation: In high-conflict divorces, children are frequently coached or manipulated by an aggrieved parent. When an experienced attorney sees through this coaching, the manipulating parent often projects their own tactics onto the attorney. Michele creates a safe space where children can finally be heard free from parental pressure. "The court ignored my 'documented' complaints." Vetted by the Court: Family courts take allegations against child attorneys extremely seriously. When a judge dismisses a parent's grievances, it is not a "clerical technicality"—it is because the allegations lack legal merit and substance. A court does not retain an advocate unless her work is sound. "There is no accountability or oversight." Rigorous Standards: Attorneys for Children in New York are subject to strict court appointment panels, formal grievance committees, ethics boards, and ongoing judicial review. Michele Bermel's 30-year track record without blemish speaks volumes about her adherence to the highest standards of the bar. The Reality of High-Conflict Custody All high-conflict divorces involve intense emotions, but true professionals do not bend to parental tantrums. • 30+ Years of Undefeated Dedication: Michele Bermel chose to step away from lucrative adult matrimonial law because her passion lies entirely in protecting children stuck in the crossfire of toxic adult disputes. • The Premier Choice in Westchester & Putnam: Out of scores of available attorneys, Michele remains among the most requested Law Guardian in the region. That level of demand from legal professionals and courts doesn't happen by accident; it is

Grab your kids hands and RUN!

It has been years and I still struggle to find a way to find forgiveness for Michele Bermel. My divorce finalized 10 years ago. I was just going through old paperwork and was reminded that we cashed out some our children's college funds to pay for her. It's shameful that we let our divorce get tha...t contentious that a law guardian was needed for our children in the first place, but don't assume a person named a law guardian actually cares about the highest and best interests of the children. She was friends with the judge. I couldn't protect my children from her once the judge ordered her into our lives. You have to be very very careful with law guardians for children. They are brought in when the divorce is contentious and are supposed to maintain neutrality. There's generally a higher income producing spouse - that's the one Michele aligned with in our instance. It wasn't about my kids. It was about being funded by my X to appeal to the judge for whatever my X happened to want that week. Transparency was nonexistent. She would manipulate my children behind closed doors to the point that one of them taped her during session and the judge still kept her with my children. She would blatantly lie in court. It was horrible with my kids tossed like roadside carnage. My youngest daughter would beg me to not have to go to her and complained often about stomachaches before going. If you have a law guardian, you have no choice. You have to take your kids there no matter how much they beg not to go. I tried to have the law guardian reassigned with a laundry list of blatant documented issues where she showed lies, manipulation and a true lack of care for my children or their highest and best interests, but I didn't file the paper "correctly" so the judge wouldn't consider it regardless that it revealed a true abuse of her role. It was a horrible, horrible experience. IMHO - Keep your kids far far FAR away from Michele Bermel. One day, I'm going to write a story about law guardians. It's scary when people that abuse that position come near your children. There is nowhere near the accountability there should be in that field. No true organization overseeing law guardians. Grab your children's hands and run from Michele Bermel. I thought she was going to retire long ago. In my opinion, she will be doing children a favor when she finally does.
