John handled my criminal case where I had a 1st degree case with heavy evidence built against me but still managed to get it downgraded to a 3rd degree. My case was extremely difficult considering I had been a repeat offender and the county sheriff department hated me. Initially the prosecutor wanted... to give me 3 years in prison with no parole. I was facing felony drug possession charges as well as a number of traffic tickets and marajuana possession charges from the same arrest. Mr. Valez got my case remanded from superior to municipal court immediately, which took care of the felony charges. I should have lost my driving privileges in N...J as well because of some of the tickets, but Mr. Valez took care of that was well. He got me out of everything with a condional discharge and even managed to reduce my probation from 1 year down to 6 months. The public defender may or may not get you a better sentence but if your facing major charges you don't want to take a chance on someone that doesn't have the opportunity to sit and talk with you and guide you through getting all the information you need for court.
