We had very little experiance with legal matters or lawyers other than a Closing on a home. Moving from a smaller town to a larger one we found our taxes were now much higher. We started to investigate on our own and discovered (through looking in the Tax Assesors' Data Base available on the towns we...bsite) that our home was being taxed much higher than other very similar sized properties. Once we determined what the savings would be for us we quickly requested an appointment with our towns Board of Assessment Appeals. We presented numerous examples of other homes in town that were of nearly the same square footage and lot size and yet were taxed much lower than ours. We felt confident at the time we would get a significant adjustment. Perhaps we were too polite and didn't come across angry enough at the hearing because we soon received a letter stating NO significant change would be made. No detailed explanation was given. We felt both disappointed and angry. Our only option was to challenge the Tax Assessors Board of Appeals decision with a lawyer.
