Showing 1 - 1 of 1 review | Ethics & Professional Responsibility

Posted by anonymous | August 02, 2018 | Hired Attorney | Ethics & Professional Responsibility

Unethical, Money hungry, Rude and unprofessional

I was actually working with my very first attorney on my divorce case and Attorney Lamanna's partner knew about my case through a common friend and indirectly influenced me that my current attorney is not doing good Job as expected in my case and she will provide me a very effective and better rate r...epresentation. I am not sure if she has ever done any divorce cases but she promised me a fair and good representation and made a commitment to not do double billing with me. During our intake when I went with my handicap father, she was introduced to me by her associate attorney. I assumed that they work together or in parallel but did not know at that time that I will be double billed for the same hour and same discussion which I found out much later when I saw my first invoice. She and her partner post ridiculous billing hours and did not stop charging me even after I fired them. Not sure I would ever recommend this attorney as she was rude, threatened me to withdraw from my case, very disrespectful to the client and will not take calls or respond to emails for several days and only created more problems for me and my ex-wife. Sad part is that I hired her based upon a strong recommendations from a close friend and put all my trust into her and her partner. They are just interested in making money out of you. If you want to waste your hard earned money, get insulted, threatened and get your case compromised then go ahead and hire attorney Jennifer. She and her associate will trick you and will win your confidence in the beginning. She will not send you invoice in a timely manner and when she sends you have to watch it carefully for errors and double/ triple billings and want you to pay them before they give you invoice on their retainer. After her associate met my spouse her behavior changed towards me and she and her partner started ignoring me and my case with long period of no communication and ignored my repeated emails/text and calls. She will fail to keep her promised phone appointment as by this time they had cashed my $25000/- check in just 2 months. I have documented all there wrong doing and going to file a complaint to the Bar counsel for partial refund on my fee paid to them. God bless them and their practice as these unethical and crooked lawyers do not care for clients who are vulnerable, emotional wrecks and suffering from the hands of their own spouses and bring bad name to this profession. She is supposed to help her clients but she speaks to them in a rude and intimidating manner and forces her ideas and is not willing to listen to them. She also misquoted her rates in her invoice and corrected only when you protest and show her signed agreement.I also found out that she reached out to my current divorce attorney and tried to influence him and my case in retaliation as I reviewed her on AVVO and threatened me as usual again to put lean against my house for overbilling me in retaliation even after I fired her and her partner from my case 20 + days back. In fact she send her invoice to my new attorney and tried to influence him in my case. I wish her well and their practice as these unethical and crooked lawyers do not care for clients who are vulnerable, emotional wrecks and suffering from the hands of their own spouses and bring bad name to this profession. I am taking this very seriously so that other innocent clients who are looking for justice shall not get into her trap. I will ask for relief from Probate and Family court and with Bar council. Thank God there are still good and ethical attorneys who understand my pain and are willing to fight for justice and ethical treatment of the clients.

This extremely dishonest review was submitted by an unreasonably needy and demanding client, who, contrary to his assertions, has had more than 5 attorneys working on his divorce case and related matters over the course of 10 months. I do not work with a partner. This client hired another attorney (a sole proprietor) who requested I join her in representing him because it was clear that his time demands (based on his perception - but not the actual complexity - of his case) exceeded her availability and patience. [I am unclear why he references bringing his "handicapped" father to his initial meeting with us, as that was clearly his choice and utterly unrelated to our representation. We certainly do not require adult clients to bring their parents to meetings.] He wished to hire us both, and signed a contract identifying both of us as counsel. We divided the work between us, reviewed and responded to hundreds of emails and texts from him, spent hours on the phone with him at all hours of the day, appeared in court for him on multiple occasions, conducted depositions and discovery, drafted motions, memoranda, complaints and voluminous correspondence (all at his request) and only billed him for consulting with each other when necessary to develop strategy or communicate important information. This is the professional standard, it was clearly explained to him in advance and is entirely ethical. I stand by every invoice I sent to this client. As he himself points out, he discovered errors on his first invoice and each issue was addressed to his satisfaction. I agreed to a reduced rate as he was referred to the other attorney by a relative of hers, but I was not aware, until he questioned the first invoice, that my hourly rate had been reduced by co-counsel to the extent it had. I honored that lowered rate without argument and immediately modified his bill. We have not threatened to put a "lean" on his house. We have advised his current counsel (who specifically assured us that a) he would ensure our bills would be paid in full, and b) that he had made that clear to this client as a condition of accepting his case, that we intend to seek a lien against the divorce estate for our unpaid bills. We requested that he caution the client that his blatant misrepresentations of fact would be exposed if he continued to behave this way. He has clearly chosen to ignore that warning. This client sent multiple emails during the course of our representation thanking us for our diligence, attention to detail and our expertise, and told us both he viewed us as "family". He is correct that we threatened to withdraw from representing him when his concerning behaviors escalated, he began refusing to follow any advice and made utterly unreasonable demands upon our time (e.g., insisting on after-hours, time-consuming phone conferences for issues previously fully vetted and discussed, despite being aware that I was busy on trial in superior court for another client who deserved my attention and focus). He retaliated by terminating our representation, and he is apparently under the impression that we were obliged to wrap up his case, prepare his new counsel, and assemble his extensive paper and digital records for free. We were still receiving responses to subpoenas served on his behalf two weeks after our termination, and we diligently assembled and transmitted the records to his new attorney. We are entitled to be paid for that time, although we have not received payment (or even a request for explanation). What we have received, instead, is this dishonest, rambling, anonymous review impugning our professionalism and ethics.
