Inexperienced - not recommended for primary wage earners

Although Ms. Wright was a sympathetic listener, she was totally unprepared and incompetent for handling my divorce. Ms. Wright might be able to handle very simple divorces, if she is representing the alimony recipient. However, if you are the primary wage-earner, I strongly urge you to find a diffe...rent attorney with more experience and case law knowledge than Ms. Wright. Here are my observations about her: 1. Ms. Wright did not know how to handle a self-insured employer. As a result of her lack of experience and knowledge of this situation, I’m now paying alimony on my employer’s contribution to my health insurance, which I should not have to do. Ms. Wright also thought that my employer would stop paying my ex-wife’s health insurance as soon as the Separation Agreement was signed. In fact, since a couple is not divorced in Massachusetts until the nisi period has passed, my employer was required to continue coverage until then. This created a lot of confusion during the settlement negotiations. 2. Ms. Wright did not know how to differentiate correctly between marital and personal property. If I had followed her interpretation of the law, I would have wound up paying my ex-wife 50 percent of the value of a property that I inherited with my siblings. Fortunately I researched this myself and found out that the property was not part of the “fabric of our marriage” so it was not considered marital property. 3. Ms. Wright was unprepared for and unable to hold her own in four-way meetings. My ex wife’s attorney ran circles around her. On some occasions, Ms. Wright had not even heard of the case law that her opponent was citing. Ms. Wright finally just took on the role of editing the text of the separation agreement while I did my best to handle the negotiating. As a result my ex-wife blames me rather than my lawyer for anything she didn’t like in the settlement. 4. Ms. Wright does not adequately understand the implications of tax law on divorcees. Ms. Wright failed to contest a clause in the Separation Agreement that required me to file taxes as Married Filing Separately, even though we would still be legally married on Dec. 31. That stipulation resulted in a huge and completely avoidable tax increase for me (but not for my ex-wife). 5. Ms. Wright did not know how to handle restricted stock units (RSUs) and stock options. She spent time arguing with my ex wife’s lawyer about how much alimony I should pay on unvested stock grants. Again, I had to research this myself and found out that the court had already put this issue to rest in the Baccanti case. 6. Ms. Wright put too much of the legal burden on me. She routinely dumped emails on me from my ex-wife’s attorney without giving me any legal context. She put the burden of figuring out the right answers on me. After I did the work to understand the issues, then she would usually just agree. Rarely was she out in front on the legal issues. 7. Ms. Wright did not spell-check or grammar-check her emails to opposing counsel. I didn’t care that her emails to me had grammatical and spelling mistakes, but when her emails to my ex-wife’s attorney contained mistakes as well, that sent the message to her opponent that she was not at her professional level. 8. Ms. Wright staked out positions that were excessive and counter-productive. At one point she sent an interrogatory to my ex-wife demanding ten years of career and income details. I pushed back because all we needed were the last few months, but Ms. Wright insisted on sending it. This provoked a totally avoidable but understandable reaction from my ex-wife who had to spend dozens of hours preparing a response. My ex-wife has not spoken to me to this day because of it.

Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
