In 1978, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case Marquette Nat. Bank of Minneapolis v. First of Omaha Service Corp. that state anti-usury laws regulating interest rates cannot be enforced against nationally chartered banks based in other states.

This ruling greatly weakened every state’s anti-usury laws, enabling the rise of the credit card industry.
