Wichita, Kansas has long been a key center for aircraft production. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the aircraft companies Beechcraft, Cessna, Mooney, and Stearman were founded there.

In 1929, the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce bestowed the title “Air Capital of the World” upon Wichita. During World War II, Wichita was a significant provider of Boeing B-29 bombers, turning out an average of 4.2 per day by 1945.
