Will a debt collector contact me through email saying that they’re going to garnish my wages?
I got an email today stating Despite my previous reminders, the above invoice for $850.32 remains unpaid. As such, we would appreciate you making this payment as soon as possible.
This letter is to notify you that we have received a Summons of Garnishment on your wages. This means that someone you owe money to has been awarded a judgment by the court for payment of the debt. The court has ordered us your employer to deduct 25-30% percent of your disposable earnings and make payment to the court on your behalf.
They gave me a case number and everything, but didn’t give me the company’s name or anything else, but the money that was going to be taken out of my paychecks.
Very unlikely. Why? Because if they have a wage garnishment, why tell you about it? You would just find out when they start taking 25% of the paycheck? 99% sounds like a scam, but if in doubt, look up the case number or contact and pay a lawyer for advice.
