Question

If a Step Parent adoption is granted, what will happen to my child's old Birth Certificate?

I am engaged to my partner of 7 years we are getting married this October. I had two children when I met my fiance. He has essentially raised my boys with me all these years. We also have children of our own together. The boys bio father is deceased, has been for 8 years.

After our wedding we plan on starting the Step Parent adoption. I am planning on hiring a lawyer for this process. But I am wondering what happens to my kids Birth Certificate after the adoption. Will my Husbands name be put on the Birth Certificate? And will the boy's last name be change on the new Birth Cert as well?

Thank you in advance

A name change and change of parentage is a legal process that is done through an adoption. Then Vital Records will issue a new Birth Certificate for a fee based on the Court order. The original Birth certificate is taken out from the records and is replaced by the new one. Vital Records does keep a copy of the old record but are usually difficult to obtain in mos states.

Thank you. Will the children's fathers name be removed from the birth certificate?

A new birth certificate is issued. This is usually done by the clerk of the court once the adoption is finalized.
