    43 years, 4,000 cases

Adoption is love. Adoption is about fulfilling your dream of raising a family. Adoption is about finding an appropriate home for a child.

Adoption is also a legal matter. While there may be an adoption agency involved in the placement, supervision or investigation, it is ultimately a decision for a court. For most of us, it is the most important legal proceeding we will be involved in our lifetimes. You want to minimize potential risks because what you really want is a family.

Stanton Phillips offers experience, knowledge and practical advice. He listens to your needs, advises you of your options and works with you to best achieve your goals. His legal practice is limited to building families through adoption and assisted reproductive technologies including surrogacy, gestational carriers and embryo adoptions.

Experience in adoptions for Stanton Phillips began in 1982 as a young litigator when an older attorney brought him into litigate a contested adoption. Now he has completed over 4,000 successful adoptions, helping families one at a time. These adoptions have come from just about every state and more than 70 countries.

Knowledge is built upon experience. Stanton Phillips has helped his clients through just about every imaginable situation and lots of situations that would be hard to imagine. He frequently teaches courses on adoption law as well as attends those presentations by his colleagues so he can follow the continuing changing landscape.

Stanton Phillips knows the adoption statutes because he has worked with the Virginia Legislature in drafting the laws. This included being the primary drafter of the major procedural rewrite in 2006 and participating in drafting the previous major rewrite in 1995. Additionally, Stanton Phillips drafted in 1999 the education statute with regards to foster children and children placed for adoption.

In the District of Columbia, Stanton Phillips was the first Chair of the D.C. Superior Court Adoption Committee consisting of Judges and lawyers that drafted the first comprehensive set of Adoption Rules. Under two D.C. mayors, he was the appointee as the attorney member of the Committee that regulates adoption agencies.

While adoption is a legal process, the route to a successful adoption involves many practical matters. Proper services need to be made available for a birth mother in order that she may adequately weigh her options. An adequate and positive support group should surround the birth mother to reassure her of her plan. We want to ensure that the birth mother is properly treated and that she has made an educated and meaningful decision that is best for both her and the baby.

Stanton Phillips has been recognized for his professional achievements in adoption as recipient of the 2006 Congressional Angel in Adoption Award. He has served as Chair of the Advisory Counsel for the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute and has organized a number of adoption programs in the U.S. Capitol. Four of his clients children have had their adoption finalized in the White House before the President and First Lady.

Stanton Phillips has co-authored or contributed to twenty books on adoption law including Adoption law in Virginia, District of Columbia Practice Manual, Adoption Law and Practice, Family Law and Practice and Legal Aspects of International Adoption.

Stanton Phillips understands your needs and believes in personal attention and a good bedside manner. He believes in handling cases quickly and timely. He knows you want to be able to go home as soon as possible with your new baby. His approach is to handle your work at the earliest opportune time so that when an emergency arises or a baby is born, he can handle the urgent matter without disrupting the routine matters. Stanton Phillips has the understanding and experience to handle your adoption while minimizing potential risks. Let Stanton Phillips help make your adoption successful and a wonderful experience.

Stanton Phillips - Stellar Attorney!
Mr. Phillips was referred to me from a friend and after speaking with him, I hired him to assist in the adoption of my granddaughter through Fairfax County DSS. Mr. Phillips was professional and courteous and took the time to explain the entire adoption process. I never felt rushed on the phone and he made certain that I fully understood the proceedings and length of time to adopt. More importantly, Mr. Phillips was prepared in advance and the adoption process took less than time I anticipated. It is clear that he lived up to his reputation as a stellar attorney!

Highly recommend
Mr Phillips handled my daughter's adoption case. He kept us informed at every step. I first contacted him in October, and he made an extra effort to work with the Court to have our case successfully reviewed by Christmas. I highly recommend him for his competence and open communication.

The best lawyer for adopting in Alexandria!
Stan was professional, prepared, and prompt throughout the entire process! We were working with a tight timeline to finalize an adoption. Stan described each step of the process and believed it was possible. Stan is a great communicator and diligent attorney. He understands the ins and outs of the entire adoption process and is prepared to guide you through or around potential obstacles throughout the process. Stan has worked hard to build credibility with his clients and with those involved in each step of the adoption process. I would highly recommend Stan to be your attorney for any adoption.

Simply the BEST!
Mr. Phillips represented me in a very complex and emotional adoption case. He was professional, kind and compassionate. He guided me through a terrifying time with expertise and empathy... and I am certain that my anxiety made me a difficult client at best. More importantly, he was SPOT-ON with every bit of legal direction and strategy. He brought our case to the OPTIMUM and most peaceful outcome. Mr. Phillips and his staff carried me through every step of the most IMPORTANT action of my life. Every cent of the legal fess paid to Mr. Phillips was worth it ten times over! Also, a shout out to the entire team at this firm! They are a wonderful group of professionals! I will never forget the professionalism, compassion and kindness you bestowed upon my family. Bless you all! My child and I are grateful and excited about our future! That is PRICELESS! (5 stars aren't nearly enough....)

Stress-free finalization
Stan helped us with the finalization of our son's adoption. We were very pleased with him. He kept us apprised of the status of our paperwork at each phase of the process, explained what to expect and made the whole experience as easy as possible for us. Would definitely hire him again.

Wonderful experience with Stan
Stan facilitated the finalization of our second daughter. He first provided a detailed explanation of his role at the initiation of the process. After that, we were kept informed of what was happening each step of the way. We always felt that we were well-cared for and that we had a strong advocate. Our finalization process was smooth and our birth certificates arrived soon after. Stan continued to think of us even after his work was done by providing us with us the forms necessary to file for a social security number. It is clear why Mr. Phillips is on the list of recommended lawyers from our adoption agency. We could not have asked for an easier or more positive experience in completing our family.

Top adoption law attorney by far!
We are so grateful for Stan! His mastery of adoption law in Virginia, and experience with out of state adoption, made him the greatest choice to protect our family. When our agency adoption was contested, post-placement, we hired Stan at the recommendation of other attorneys; that says a lot! He built a plan to navigate the law, in both states, to protect our daughters well being. While his office is in Northern VA (Vienna), he managed all filings for our case in Southern VA (Chesapeake), as if we were located in the same city-not miles apart. He took his role personal-and we are forever grateful for Stan's experience and knowledge to secure our adoption!
