Steven Kahn is a Portland, Oregon native. After graduating from Wilson High School, Steven attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he graduated in 1985. He returned to Portland to attend Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College, where he was honored as a member of the Cornelius Honor Society, on the basis of his superior scholarship, leadership and contribution to the law school community. He graduated magna cum laude in 1988, but has remained active and involved in the law school community, serving on its Alumni Board of Directors for seven years, and serving as Alumni Board President from 1998 - 2000.
Steven was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1988 and began practicing with a prominent insurance defense law firm in Portland, representing insurance clients in all types of civil litigation for two and a half years.
In 1991, Steven joined his father, Garry's, law practice and began representing plaintiffs in personal injury and negligence matters. When Garry became a judge on the Multnomah County Circuit Court bench, Steven took over his father's practice, becoming a sole practitioner for two years before Garry retired from the bench and returned to practice with Steven, forming the current Kahn & Kahn, where, together, they have been representing the victims of all forms of negligence and wrongs since 1994.
During his two years as a sole practitioner, representing injured people against insurance companies, Steven was "tested" frequently by the insurers, trying six jury trials in his first year. During this period, Steven earned a reputation as a serious and formidable litigator, willing to fight hard for his clients. In his very first trial as a plaintiff's attorney, Steven won a verdict against State Farm Insurance Company for an amount in excess of the policy limits, forcing State Farm to pay more to his client than the State Farm policy required.
Since then, Steven has successfully represented people injured by negligent drivers in liability and uninsured motorist claims; the families of people who have been wrongfully killed by the negligence of others; victims of medical negligence; people injured by defective products; people injured by dangerous conditions on premises, such as slips and falls in grocery stores, trips and falls in parking lots of apartment complexes, and dog bites; bicyclists hit and injured by motorists; motorcyclists hit and injured by motorists; pedestrians struck and injured by motorists; and the occasional contract claim, unlawful trade practices claim, and claims for health insurance or disability benefits.
Steven is an attorney at law in all courts of the State of Oregon, an Attorney Counselor and Advocate of the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, Attorney and Counselor of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; a member of The American Trial Lawyers Association, the Multnomah Bar Association; and former Barrister with American Inns of Court. During his years of practice, Steven has served on Bar and civic committees and has spoken at Continuing Legal Education seminars on the topics of Premises Liability, Attorney Fees and Arbitration.
Steven is married with two children and devotes hours of community service to local and national social service agencies. He is an avid runner and bicyclist.
