Sandhya Gupta’s civil-rights practice has included protecting voting rights and free speech; challenging race, sex, and religious discrimination; combatting retaliation—including retaliation against public-employee whistleblowers; promoting transparency and accountability in public entities (through open-meetings and public-records enforcement), and contesting wrongful detention and prosecution. She has also practiced white-collar criminal defense. She has argued in federal district and appellate courts, as well as before administrative bodies, including significant wins for civil-rights plaintiffs throughout the Sixth Circuit.
Before joining Chandra Law, Sandhya clerked for the Honorable James S. Gwin, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio. Her previous experience also includes practicing environmental law with the firm Arnold & Porter LLP (now Arnold & Porter Kay Scholer LLP). In 1998–99, she was a Fulbright Scholar to India, where she focused on women’s participation in local politics.
In 2016, she was recognized for her voting-rights work with the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless’s Champion of Civil Rights award. In 2015, she was selected by the German Marshall Fund, together with the Cleveland Foundation, as a Marshall Memorial Fellow to travel through Europe meeting with political and civic leaders. In 2014, Crain’s Cleveland Business honored her civic and professional leadership with its “40-under-40” award.
Sandhya received her J.D. in 2004 from Columbia Law School, in New York City, where she was an Articles Editor on the Columbia Law Review. She received her A.B., cum laude, from Princeton University, where she majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public International Affairs.
