I could not have asked for a better advocate to represent my interests
I was a client of Ms. Gupta on a voting rights case and was impressed with her ability to bring the law to the layperson. Attorney Gupta helped with preparation of filings, defending depositions, and then arguing our case in court. She spent long hours getting the information in an understandable and concise format. This was so that it was the most accurate representation of the facts for the court, but also to assure that we both were on the same page. She repeatedly met with me to get clarity and became an expert on the voting process in Ohio.
Sandhya Gupta was really good in processing the flurry of documents from the State of Ohio into the core issues of contention. She prepared for depositions to gather facts as well as helping to provide advice with the state deposition. I was able to sit in on a deposition that she conducted that was extremely educational in helping all understand the issues in practice and to bring the conflict to life. Gupta was very calm and determined in focusing her questions. I could not have asked for a better advocate to represent my interests and the interests of my agency.
Gupta was able to translate the law for those who have not endured the pain of law school. She seemed well prepared for court and asked revealing questions. Gupta acted professionally in defending her clients when they were on the witness stand, and then preventing overly broad questioning. She was also very good advocating our specific position in court and presenting the impact of these decisions on the average Ohioan.
Gupta is a quick thinker and is inquisitive. I believe she demonstrated her tenacious pursuit of the truth in my dealings with her. She plowed through all the information about voting and became one of the most knowledgeable people in the state on our complicated system for casting a ballot. I was very satisfied with her representation of my interests and the interests of my agency.
Civil rights, including employment discrimination and retaliation, voting rights, defamation, open government, wrongful detention, police misconduct
Sandhya Gupta’s civil-rights practice has included protecting voting rights and free speech; challenging race, sex, and religious discrimination; combatting retaliation—including retaliation against public-employee whistleblowers; promoting transparency and accountability in public entities (through open-meetings and public-records enforcement), and contesting wrongful detention and prosecution. She has also practiced white-collar criminal defense. She has argued in federal district and appellate courts, as well as before administrative bodies, including significant wins for civil-rights plaintiffs throughout the Sixth Circuit.
Before joining Chandra Law, Sandhya clerked for the Honorable James S. Gwin, U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Ohio. Her previous experience also includes practicing environmental law with the firm Arnold & Porter LLP (now Arnold & Porter Kay Scholer LLP). In 1998–99, she was a Fulbright Scholar to India, where she focused on women’s participation in local politics.
In 2016, she was recognized for her voting-rights work with the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless’s Champion of Civil Rights award. In 2015, she was selected by the German Marshall Fund, together with the Cleveland Foundation, as a Marshall Memorial Fellow to travel through Europe meeting with political and civic leaders. In 2014, Crain’s Cleveland Business honored her civic and professional leadership with its “40-under-40” award.
Sandhya received her J.D. in 2004 from Columbia Law School, in New York City, where she was an Articles Editor on the Columbia Law Review. She received her A.B., cum laude, from Princeton University, where she majored in the Woodrow Wilson School of Public International Affairs.
