*BEWARE* Not an honest attorney

I found this lawyer here on AVVO. His reviews looked good and so I gave him a call. He seemed sharp and knowledgeable so we discussed the details of my case and I was given a retainer quote. I paid his $2,000 retainer even though I only needed him to represent me at one hearing since my case was prev...iously already disposed of. He said the reason he needed so much money on the retainer for a simple hearing was because he had to order transcripts of my prior trial and it would take 3-4 hours to review those. Come to find out at the hearing he never ordered the transcripts so he told me he would only charge me a few hours for his services which I agreed was fair. When I called days later to ask if my balance on the retainer was refunded his demeanor changed and said he didn't think I was owed anything but maybe an hour back. I couldn't believe his response. An honest attorney with ethics would never pull such a move. He then proceeded to ask me what it would take for me to go away. I stated I would just like to be refunded my balance of the retainer that I was promised. He then hung up on me. The only reason I am giving him 2 stars instead of 1 is because he did what he was supposed to do at court but overbilling a new client from what was previously agreed on is not ethical and can't be trusted to be in your best interests.

James, As we’ve discussed offline on numerous occasions, you are simply mischaracterizing our discussions and understandings. When you retained me two days before your hearing, I requested a 6-hour retainer deposit based on my estimate of two hours for the hearing itself and four hours to undertake a number of pre-hearing tasks, including the following items: consultation with you, review of the trial transcript, the pleading history, and the discovery requests and responses previously exchanged by the parties, and drafting and filing a written response to the pending motion for new trial. Contrary to your contention, I ordered the trial transcript by email minutes after speaking with you on the phone, but the court reporter was unable to provide the transcript in time since it was ordered less than two days before your hearing. I completed the remaining items outlined above in approximately three hours. Almost immediately after we won your hearing, you began to state that I was overbilling you, even though I estimated 6 hours for the representation and finished it in 4.4. I attempted to resolve the matter with you over the phone, but you insisted upon an alternative set of facts and would not accept any compromise other than your suggestion that I bill you for 2-3 hours only. I certainly never hung up on you. In an attempt to assuage your concerns – which you were very passionate about – I wrote you a 4-page letter detailing the time expended, to the minute, with reference to call history, emails, timestamps on filings, and the record of time entries in my practice management software. I even discounted your bill by $125 in an effort to stop you from following through with your threats to damage my reputation with online reviews. Clearly, that effort failed. However, I stand by everything in my letter and reiterate that you were not overbilled; you were actually billed substantially less than earned. I regret that my efforts to end our business on a positive note were unsuccessful and wish you the best in your future engagements. Sincerely, Jacob W. Stasny

Smart, Meticulous, Easy to Talk To, and Prepared - Highly Recommend (after 3 legal matters)

We have hired Jacob Stasny for three legal matters in the past 3 years; a will, a lawsuit and to consult and represent at a one-off hearing. We feel like we have found a trusted ally that I would turn to for any legal question or dilemma. His background and MBA in finance makes him an ideal fit... for a business's legal needs and we felt comfortable that he has a good perspective on the financial ramifications of each legal matter. At this point he's on our speed dial in case we ever get in a legal jam. He won our lawsuit, which was really tricky and one which I didn't even think that we could win! He got a nice resolution for us and negotiated on our behalf with great skill and foresight. He is obviously very smart, capable, tough and polished (which you want in a lawyer) but also cooperative and congenial to partner with. I recommend Jacob Stasny to family and friends for both contracts, business business affairs, trusts, wills and any family matter that would get dicey without representation. He spells out a lot in an initial consultation and doesn't waste time or money. Jacob is sometimes in meetings or in court and not available to talk so his office staff is important and they are also very helpful and available when you have to touch base quickly on some issue or detail. We've been really happy with the outcome of our three legal matters that we've entrusted to Jacob and will hire him again.

Knowledgable, Caring and Prepared

I was served divorce papers and needed an attorney very quickly. I didn't know where to turn, as it was the most stressful time in my life, I needed someone who I could rely on to guide me through this process the right way. Jacob was highly recommended from a close friend. I quickly put together a... list of three attorneys to consult. I spoke with the first one and it did not go over well at all. I was put off by his demeanor from the outset and I did not, and would not, trust this guy with my divorce case. Then I met with Jacob. He immediately put everything aside and asked questions about me, my spouse, and how we got to this point. When you have never been through a divorce, everything seem intimidating. Jacob was great about explaining the process, reminding me that this is all normal in a divorce case. I cancelled my third appointment and immediately hired Jacob. He took control of the case, kept me informed, and he was always prepared for the worst. He was always available, following up on items and issues as they would arise and handling them quickly to keep the proceedings moving along. I hold Jacob Stasny in high regard and would recommend him to my closest friends and family. I believe if you are compelled to consult multiple attorneys, Jacob should absolutely be on your list. He will be the attorney I go to for any legal matters going forward.

Great Attorney!

Jacob consistently acted in my best interests during a difficult and emotionally charged case. He is professional, hard-working and ethical, which is a relief to find when you need representation. At the time I contacted him, I was involved in an extremely complicated lawsuit. During the year he was ...my attorney, he worked his way past all the non-essentials and managed to keep me informed and things on track. I would, without hesitation, work with Jacob again and recommend him to anyone who needs an attorney that can be trusted to give advice and counsel to benefit the client, and not himself.
