Greetings, and thank you for your interest in my services.
EMPLOYMENT, especially DISCRIMINATION, DENIAL OF ACCOMODATIONS, and/or UNLAWFUL TERMINATION
I advocate zealously for people who have been treated illegally in the workplace. Illegal treatment includes wrongful (discriminatory or retaliatory) termination, discrimination (based on a protected classification--race, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion), harassment, and failure to accommodate disabilities. Please understand that simply BAD treatment in the workplace, all too common, is not illegal. However, you may be able to show this treatment was the result of discrimination. For example, you may have been discriminated against because of your age, even though it is not obvious or you do not know how you would prove it. (Similarly, even though you are white, or male, or heterosexual, that does not mean you have not experienced discrimination.) The law is complicated, and that is why I'm here to help.
ANIMAL LAW
I welcome clients, both individual and business, seeking consultation, education, mediation, and/or legal representation (in the following animal matters:
Dog Bites (a dog bit you or your dog bit someone)
"Dangerous" Dogs
Dog Seizures
Service/Assistance Animals
Emotional Support Animals
Harm or Threats to Your Pet
Abuse Allegations
Disputes Over Ownership and/or Custody
Domestice Violence Involving Animals
Landlord/Tenant Issues Involving Animals
Pet Trusts (preparing for care of your pet when you can no longer care for him/her)
Small Businesses with Animals (including non-profits): Duties, Liabilities, Contracts
Animal Activists: 1st Amendment issues, Bail Hearings, Habeus Corpus Proceedings (for Humans and Nonhumans), Unlawful Arrests
MY BACKGROUND
My commitment to social justice stretches back through many years of nonprofit and activist work. I have led and participated in efforts for environmental and consumer rights, race/gender/age/disability equity, affordable housing, and animal rights and welfare. Before attending law school, I earned a doctorate in English (literature) and a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies, from the City University of New York (CUNY). I served as a college professor for many years, working with diverse populations, including students from many a range of countries and many students with disabilities. I taught courses in literature, writing, and Women’s and Gender Studies, among others. Some of my online publications are available through links on my resume. I have presented scholarship around the country and internationally.
I earned a Juris Doctor at Vermont Law School, where I graduated cum laude. My work during law school included positions as Articles Editor of the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law, State House Liaison for Vermont Public Interest Research Group, Clinician at the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Clinic, and Clinician at the Center for Agriculture and Food Studies, supporting small farmers committed to animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
After law school, I worked for several years in employment law, fightint discrimination, and for a year as a prosecutor with a mainly child protection docket.
In and outside of law school, and ongoing, I have studied animals in human society. I studied with some of the top animal attorneys and scholars. For decades, I have fostered and rescued animals and voluteered at animal shelters.
