John is a supporter and advocate for utilizing the Collaborative Law process for divorces. While this process is not appropriate in all situations, he has found that it nearly always results in a resolution that both parties feel is a fair and balanced resolution of the legal issues. The nature of the process very often results in lower stress for the spouses, and permits there to be a true focus on the best interests of the children.
The Collaborative Law process provides a confidential and interest focused solution that addresses the specific needs of the divorcing couple, and does so in a respectful, non-adversarial manner. To learn more about collaborative law, please go to the firm's website: .
John has been concentrating on collaborative divorces since he first sought out the training on Collaborative Law at the beginning of 2006. Since then, he has represented over 50 clients as they went through the collaborative divorce process. John has also augmented his initial 52 hours of collaborative law training with approximately 100 hours of additional advanced collaborative practice training presented in state and national training venues including Tacoma, Chicago, San Diego, Minneapolis, and Montreal Canada.
Something unique about John is that he brings an extensive mix of past experience to his law practice. Prior to attending law school at Gonzaga, John had a successful business management career in both banking and marketing companies, and also served the country as an Air Force officer for four years immediately after earning his bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota.
John and his wife have 8 children and 11 grandchildren. He has volunteered for various youth groups, including the Boy Scouts in various positions including Scout Master and for 5 years as a Junior Achievement Advisor. He is an avid outdoorsman and do-it-yourselfer. He loves virtually all watersports, including scuba diving. He (or more accurately his wife) currently owns six horses. For new challenges, John earned his private pilot certificate in 2006.

He made this transition as painless as possible and immediately made me feel comfortable and confident. He was extrem...

Excellent experince with a collaborative divorce
John was my lawyer for a collaborative divorce. He was readily available and flexible in scheduling meetings. It is apparent that he has significant experience handling collaborative divorces. There was only one point when the process looked like it might get derailed, and he was instrumental to gett...
"John has a thorough understanding of Washington family law and is an excellent Collaborative Lawyer—a conscientious and ethical individual with a solid moral compass. John always does a great job for his client even in difficult circumstances."

"I endorse this lawyer. I first met John while meeting with the Spokane County Collaborative Professionals. Since our initial introduction I have had the privilege of meeting with John on a number of different occasions. John is very dedicated to the collaborative process and his knowledge of that process is unmatched in this area."
"I endorse this lawyer. I first met John about 8 years ago when we were opposing counsel on a matter. John was very professional and well-prepared. He did an excellent job representing his client."
"I worked with John for several years as a fellow Director on the Board of Directors of Collaborative Professionals of Washington (CPW). John is a "founding father" of Collaborative Law in Washington, and CPW. He served on its Board in many capacities, including treasurer. I truly appreciated John's intelligent wisdom and calm insights, not to mention his unwavering hard work and uncompromising committment to excellence. I highly recommend John!"
"It is often said that what makes a good professional is not what graduate school they went to but what kind of childhood they experienced. What kind of experience you have with an attorney is often influenced more by what kind of person they are than what law school they went to. John is a very good lawyer but he's an even better human being. John's firm handles many kinds of cases and the other attorneys in his firm and his staff reflect John's high legal and ethical standards. John has an excellent base in collaborative law and he is continually expanding his skills and training. John always brings excellent legal skills and a broad range of real world experience to the table. If all lawyers conducted their professional and personal lives like John, there would be no more lawyer jokes. I highly recommend John and his firm"
"This lawyer is an expert in collaborative law. He has trained with the best in the United States in this field. He is patient and works as a team member in the collaborative setting. If you want to avoid the trials and tribulations of litigation go see John."
"I endorse this lawyer. John has mastered the collaborative process. He is the most experienced and knowledgeable collaborative attorney in Eastern Washington."
"I had the great pleasure to work with John for several years on the Board of Directors of our statewide organization, Collaborative Professionals of Washington. I was always impressed with John's thoughtfulness, compassion, attention to detail, and his commitment to peaceful resolution of divorce issues through Collaboration."
"I first met John when he was opposing counsel on a divorce/custody matter. I was impressed at his solid advocacy and his dignified professionalism. John's commitment to helping his clients meet their needs extended to his embracing and promoting Collaborative Law. He now serves on the Board of Spokane County Collaborative Professionals and the state organization, Collaborative Professionals of Washington. I have worked with John on a couple of collaborative cases and he was effective and easy to work with. He is also a very decent guy...the kind you want on your side."
