Rob Morgan Hill is a founding member and managing attorney of the Morgan Hill Law Firm. Raised in New York, he has been an Olympia resident since 1987. He earned his B.A. in Journalism and Broadcasting at the State University of New York College at Buffalo in 1987 and completed his education at the University of Washington School of Law in 1992. Prior to entering private practice he worked in public information and as a budget and policy analyst under Governors Gardner and Lowry.

Rob's practice includes family law, criminal law and personal injury law. He works primarily in five Washington counties - Thurston, Mason, Lewis, Pierce and Grays Harbor - and has litigated cases before the Washington Court of Appeals Divisions I and II as well as the Washington Supreme Court. He serves as a substitute family court commissioner in Thurston County and has previously served on the Board of Directors of the Thurston County Bar Association, where he has acted as the editor of the Association's newsletter and proudly compiled the worst meeting attendance record of any Board Member in the organization's history.

Rob says his practice style is a client-focused one.

"People often come to me saying that they have heard that I am an aggressive litigator," he says, "and I have to clarify that. I am aggressive when the client's objectives are best advanced by being aggressive. But in reality, the client's interests are often advanced by negotiation and compromise, and sometimes even by charm and humor. The trick is to know my client, know my client's goals, and to figure out how best to advance those goals."

In some cases, of course, there is no room for compromise. For years, Rob has represented Washington teachers accused of criminal conduct with students. Teachers are extremely vulnerable to such accusations, he says, because a mere allegation by a student can result in substantial damage to career and reputation. If proven, the allegations can result in permanent loss of professional credentials and often severe criminal penalties, including imprisonment. Rob has worked hard for his educator clients who have been faced with such accusations, placing the Morgan Hill law firm among the leaders in defending Washington teachers.

When not practicing law, Rob is a husband to Jane and father to three daughters. He is a singer/guitarist and award winning songwriter (Song of the Year finalist 2004, Christian/Gospel category), whose original songs are featured on two CDs, including his most recent release with his band Game Six, the 2009 album God, Love & Mexico, winner of a 2009 GrIndy Award from . He is also an award winning humorist (Best Humor Column 1995, Washington Press Association), screenwriter (Finalist, Washington State Film Commission Screenplay Competition, 2000), and standup comic who has appeared at Caroline's on Broadway in New York City and The Comedy Store in West Hollywood.

I wouldn’t hire anybody else as my attorney!
Rob paid attention to every detail and was exceptionally thorough with every aspect of my case. Rob was honest with his opinions and gave me the best advice along the way which lead to me receiving exactly what I was asking for in my custody hearing. I would recommend hiring Rob to anybody.

A Lawyer With Integrity
I first walked into Rob's office approximately a year-and-a-half ago. He came highly recommended by another respected attorney in my county, but I was looking to go outside of my county for my particular case. What started out as a half hour consultation turned out to be a two-and-a-half-hour meeting where we went over every possible detail of my case. His knowledge on family law and understanding of domestic situations was very confirming. Rob was present, listened and gave very wise advice. He was also a voice of reason in what is often a very emotional process when it comes to custodial disputes. Throughout my case he was 100% on board. His legal assistant Cheryl was also very competent and quick to respond to my many emails within the business day. I even recall Rob responding to an email after 10pm on a Saturday once. Rob has represented me through a hearing, an appeal and a settlement conference, all being successful. If I ever needed to come in and sit down with him to talk about the case he was always avaiable. One of the reasons I chose him as an attorney was because I had heard that he is aggressive in the courtroom, but I wasn't expecting him to be entertaining as well. It's very clear that Rob has a respected reputation among his colleagues. The truth is that he is a calm and reasonable man, not a hot head. But he won't be pushed around and he is firm to stand for his client. He carries this personality well. Rob provided more than just legal advocacy. For me he was a covering of peace through this entire process. You can't put an hourly rate on that. Rob is also a talented musician who enjoys to travel, he understands what's important and what's worth investing time in. Many of us never figure that out. With that being said, it also shouldn't go unnoticed that my settlement hearing was in between his tour dates where he was scheduled to perform across the country. He didn't reschedule my conference and he didn't find somebody else in the office to cover it for him. He flew in and showed up, the meeting was highly successful and I believe it's because he understood the weight of his presence in the room. That in itself speaks volumes for this man's character and professional manner. I couldn't have imagined going through this process without him or his team.

Happily Divorced
Rob was the right lawyer to handle my divorce and support arrangements. He was proactive with our plan and our deadlines... and clearly knows the system well. What's more, he paid attention like he cared. His relaxed and friendly demeanor took the edge off an edgy situation. He kept me informed, he gave me good (sometimes difficult) advice, and he was expeditious with his time. I landed in a good place...It could have gone differently.

Single dad has my family thanks to Rob
Robs calm nature and wisdom has led me a single father through my divorce against three separate attorneys my ex brought against me. He preserved my ability to be my kids dad while protecting them against a challenged mother who at the time was unable to rationalize life through her addictions. If your looking for an ax swinging cut throat revenge lawyer this is NOT that lawyer . I your looking for a knowledgeable honest patient lawyer that knows the legal system and sides with what is the right thing to do, he is... and why he has been my lawyer for over a decade now .

against women
This attorney is not for women and is vindictive in his approach. You think he is for you when he is about getting more men custody of children rather than doing what is right

Helps abusers further abuse
This lawyer tells stories just like he said. He takes things and twists words to provide a story that the judge likes. He has helped multiple abusers further abuse and does not understand how the abuse cycle works or he would see through it. He takes on clients that have track records of abuse, addiction, and poor behavior and helps them get custody of children. I will never hire him again

More like a golden lab than a pit bull - can't recommend as an attorney
Rob is a nice guy. Plays in a band, likes to travel. He just doesn't seem to give much focus on work until it's crunch time like a court hearing. Rob doesn't pay attention to the very important details, allows opposing counsel to lead the case to their advantage and then goes on defense, and he likes to negotiate - usually to your detriment. I can't recommend him and would never hire him again.

Response from Robert Hill August 24, 2017
Hard to respond to a vague and anonymous critique, but the reviewer appears to be frustrated and impatient with the process, which is not uncommon. The process is not designed to be enjoyable, and some have less of a stomach for it than others. There are also some times when the lawyer-client relationship just doesnt match up well for reasons of personality or style, which may be the case here. A minor technicality, but I am not in a band, although I am a musician and songwriter. This is the first time in 25 years of practice that a client has ever reported being bothered by that. The skills that are sharpened in performing and song writing - story telling, memory, focus - come in very handy when presenting a family law case to a judge - the details can be important, but it's usually the story that carries the day. My music is no secret, is featured on the website of the firm (in which all four attorneys are musicians, three of us recording artists with some acclaim and/or awards) We actually feel pretty good about that and have found that these creative skills enhance our practice rather than detract from it. Although I do sometimes travel in connection with my music, this review comes at a time when it has been a year since I have been away from the office for music for longer than an extended weekend. And with few exceptions, I make myself available to clients via phone and email during my trips, whether they are music related or not. I rarely disconnect. There is no case in which I "allow opposing counsel to lead the case to their advantage." Not really sure what that means, but certainly there are times when you are on defense in litigation and times when you are on offense. These are sometimes things out of the lawyer's control and sometimes things that are decided in consultation with the client, who is ultimately the decision maker. Which makes the "negotiation" criticism kind of a head scratcher, since no offer is ever made or accepted without the client's endorsement and approval. Negotiation and compromise and efforts to resolve cases by agreement are almost always in the best interest of the client, since litigation is uncertain and expensive. In most cases, you'd rather have your lawyer be a golden lab than a pit bull, since family law cases that resolve favorably for the client usually resolve by agreement. I dp have some clients who would say I am a pit bull because there are circumstances in which that is the best or only option, sometimes resulting from an unwillingness of the other side to negotiate a reasonable settlement. In any event, a negotiation is rarely "detrimental", unless one sees detriment in a compromise resulting from both parties making concessions in exchange for concessions from the other party, thereby resolving the case with less expense and stress and acrimony. Interestingly, the anonymous reviewer never brought these concerns to me, which I can say with confidence because NO client has ever brought these concerns to me.

Child custody Attorney | May 01

"Rob has an acute knowledge of child custody and relocation issues in Washington. I would not hesitate to contact him for your legal needs."
Divorce and separation Attorney | Apr 11
Relationship: Fellow lawyer in community
"I endorse this lawyer. I don't give out endorsements to peers lightly or frequently. In my view a lot of this is too political. Good lawyers probably don't need my endorsement or anybody else's because their work speaks for itself. With that in mind, I give an unequivocal endorsement to my colleague, Rob Hill. He stands out among lawyers for his unique communication skills, acerbic wit, and God-given sense of humour. One case at a time, one client at a time Rob has built a sterling reputation in the local legal community. He has earned my respect."
