Incompetent and Dishonest

I hired Ms. Morfitt in 2021 to represent me in my divorce. I expected my divorce to be fairly straightforward, my ex-husband and I shared two children, but it seemed like nothing an attorney who had been licensed for 11 years at that time couldn’t handle. Her fees were affordable and she seemed ver...y communicative during my initial interactions with her. My ex-husband, on the other hand, prepared for battle by hiring an extremely aggressive and experienced attorney. Opposing counsel served a temporary protection order, falsely accusing me of being mentally unstable and a danger to my children. When Ms. Morfitt called to inform me of this, I was shocked, terrified, and in dire need of guidance. Ms. Morfitt told me, “You can either sign it now or we go to court tomorrow and a judge will order you to sign it.” This was hardly a certainty. A judge or commissioner would have decided whether opposing counsel’s claims held merit or not, but having very little experience with the court system at that time, I believed my attorney. Ms. Morfitt assured me that this was only temporary and we could have it terminated in court within a matter of weeks. I assumed Ms. Morfitt felt unprepared to defend me from opposing counsel’s attack in as little as 24 hours, and needed to buy time to prepare. I endured the humiliation and torment caused by the temporary protection order for the next few weeks in the hopes of our reaching a fair and just court ruling at the upcoming hearing. In the weeks leading up to the court date, Ms. Morfitt became less communicative and I had to ask what was needed of me. She requested I put together a few documents by a specific date and I had them returned to her well before the deadline she gave me, which was the Friday prior to my Monday court date. Before the Zoom call began, Ms. Morfitt cautioned me to stay silent and only unmute myself if asked to do so by the commissioner. When the hearing began, the commissioner asked Ms. Morfitt why some of my documents had not been submitted to her before the court deadline. Ms. Morfitt had submitted the documents only the morning of the hearing. Ms. Morfitt appeared flustered and said, “the forms were late because I told my client that she should spend these last few weeks focusing on her mental health.” Ms. Morfitt committed perjury when she lied about why she failed to submit the documents on time. Additionally, Ms. Morfitt never once advised me to focus on my mental health, and her claim to do so only supported opposing counsel’s false accusations. The commissioner ordered a continuance and the protection order remained in place. Following the Zoom call, I fired Ms. Morfitt and sought new representation. Kelsey Morfitt made little to no attempt to prepare herself to represent me or reunite me with my children. If she lacked the experience (as she did) to be successful in such a contentious case, she should have sought help from one of the more tenured lawyers at her firm. It took a year to terminate the protection order, an additional year to finalize my divorce, over $100,000 in legal fees, and countless degrading hoops to jump through (mental health evaluation, addiction group counseling, supervised visitations) to prove in the end that my husband was lying and that I am a good mother. It also took a devastating toll to both myself and my children. I was diagnosed with PTSD following my divorce, which is why I’m only now writing this review four years later. It’s still very difficult for me to think about or discuss the year that followed the worst advice I’ve ever taken: Sign the form. Kelsey’s cavalier approach to my case resulted in more pain than I can convey, and from which I am unlikely to fully recover. In summary, I found Kelsey Morfitt to be an incompetent and dishonest attorney who exhibited complete disregard for my best interests.

Always Patient and Willing To Put Her Client First Over Money

Kelsey was such a huge help during my divorce. Not only did she help me receive what I needed in terms of alimony and military retirement, but she also helped me cope through the trauma from the divorce. Also she doesn't try to give false hope like other lawyers, she clearly states the facts of your ...case and what she can do for you. She was always patient with me and even found ways to where I would be able to save on certain costs while giving me as much help as I needed. I highly recommend Kelsey for those who not only need help with the legal problems they face, but also for the mental struggles that comes with it. She's humble, has integrity in a time where some lawyers look out for their best interests instead of looking out for their client, and is caring enough to check up on me even after the case is done. Thank you so much Kelsey!
