Jenny is admitted to practice law in the states of Washington, New York and Massachusetts and has been practicing law for over 32 years. She holds an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School where she was an editor of the Brooklyn Journal of International Law. Jenny received a B.A., cum laude, in English Literature from Yale University.
From 1990 to 2006, Jenny practiced law in New York City as an attorney in the tax departments of Dewey, Ballantine LLP, Brown & Wood LLP and Sidley Austin LLP, all top tier law firms specializing in the financial sector. After moving to the Northwest with her then husband and daughter in 2006, Jenny focused on international transactions as a member of the tax practice group in the Seattle office of Dorsey & Whitney LLP, a global law firm.
Jenny formed her own law practice, Jenny Coates Law, PLLC, in 2011 and quickly found herself busy with local and international clients needing advice on a variety of tax issues and business planning. While Jenny draws on her large firm experience, she particularly enjoys the relationships she is able to build with clients through her own firm. Jenny enjoys learning about people’s lives, businesses and dreams and works closely with them to bring their plans to fruition and address issues that need resolution.
When not practicing law, Jenny sings with two choirs, enjoys playing pickleball and doing yoga. She, herself, is a published poet, with a number of her poems also selected for public readings.

Simple Matter well managed
I hired Jennifer to help me setup a non-profit. It was not complicated, but she was helpful in answering questions and setting it all up.

Great work and fast responses
As a small business owner, I really have appreciated how quickly Jennifer has been able to turn around requests. On more than one occasion she has caught some very unfavorable (to us) language during the review of potential contracts. Her guidance on our business strategy and assistance in navigati...

Jenny Coates Law
Jenny helped me file the legal documentation to register my consulting practice with the office of the WA Secretary of State. She has provided excellent and timely legal counsel on other tax and business related matters for my company.

Excellent attorney who has your back all the way.
I hired Jenny Coates in Nov 2017 for an IRS compliance filing. Jenny was easy to work with. She was thorough from the first minute until the very end of the five-month process. She never sugar-coated what was required; she presented the big picture of what the process would entail and covered all the...

Her in-depth knowledge and detailed analysis on complex international tax issues provided great value to our team and client. In addition, speed is one of the key factors for M&As, and Jenny worked diligently and professionally throughout the transaction in order to meet the tight deadline. I highly recommend Jenny for international tax matters."
