Incompetent representation; coerced a guilty plea at arraignment

I strongly advise against retaining this attorney. She represented my son, who had just turned 18 the week prior, and demonstrated a complete lack of preparation and care. During the arraignment—a stage where standard legal practice is almost always to plead "not guilty" to allow time for discovery...—she coerced my son into pleading guilty to misdemeanors by threatening him with felony charges if he refused. This was done without her having any evident knowledge of the specific charges or conducting any prior research into his case. My son had valid defenses and exculpatory evidence for two of the three charges, but because she refused to speak with me or review the facts, this evidence was never considered. Instead, she rushed a scared 18-year-old into a conviction under duress. If you or a family member are assigned this attorney, I highly recommend requesting new counsel immediately to ensure you receive a fair defense.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
