About Athan

Learn Athan’s areas of practice.

My practice focuses on construction and contract law and complex commercial litigation. I have advised public and private clients on various issues throughout the construction process, negotiated and drafted design and construction contracts, prepared various procurement documents, and successfully represented clients throughout the dispute resolution process in both trial and appellate courts.  I have served as lead counsel and second chair for bench and jury trials and have tried criminal felony jury trials while participating in a trial fellowship program with the King County Prosecutor’s office.  I have also served as a third-party neutral, assisting parties in resolving their disputes.

I teach Construction Law for the University of Washington’s Construction Management program. I co-authored chapters 4, and 4.1 of the Washington Civil Procedure Deskbook.  I have also written several articles on construction law and have presented sections on construction law for government contracting and continuing legal education seminars.

Prior to entering law school, I worked as a construction project engineer for a general contractor and developer.  During law school, I was an associate editor of the Seattle University Law Review and I earned CALI awards in Legal Writing, Contracts, Property, and Intellectual Property.

Highly Recommend
We retained Athan when a contractor performed defective work, then filed a lien on our property. Athan not only got the court to order the lien be removed, he also got the contractor to pay our attorney fees. The whole time, Athan communicated with us every step of the way, and told us what to expect. We highly recommend Athan.

We highly recommend Athan
Athan took on our case that involved a complicated arms-length deal for a residential property. He was very responsive and patient with our questions even if it meant going over the same points! We felt comfortable working with him during the whole process. The final PSA that we signed had multiple items that will protect us in our transaction.

Hard working and concerned for his clients
Athan did a great job of representing our group in a very complicated legal matter. Though faced with many challenging and unfamiliar issues outside his normal area of practice, Athan proved to be a quick study. He's bright, has an eye for detail, possesses a genuine concern for his clients and produces a work product of high quality. Communication with our group was excellent. From legal research to writing pleadings to handling oral arguments and even dealing with the media, Athan was always professional and highly competent. A lawyer for all seasons.
