Unethical and Uncaring

I am a 53 year old female who was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease in January 2023, four months later my husband left me and filed for a divorce. This was beyond devastating to say the least. I was in a bad spot and unable to pay for an attorney without going through a program in my s...tate called Moderate Means. This program allows attorneys to select cases they are willing to work on at a discounted rate. Vincent Humphrey who is the managing attorney at this firm selected my case. The first thing that I should have inquired about was the $ processing fee they charged me to take my retainer payment. This is how they used my money? It got much, much worse. They charged me to read emails I sent to them asking for help in obtaining tax documents that my husband was refusing to provide me with and was in contempt of court for refusing to provide. I emailed at least 7 times asking for the documents I needed in order to itemize my return and was billed to read the emails but they did nothing, not even a response. The next big issue that took place was they asked me to provide them with all of my financials stuff when I first hired them to represent me and they did absolutely nothing with them. Months later my husband filed a motion for Temporary Support and my attorney asked me to provide her the same information including records from the months that had passed since I first jumped through this hoop. It gets worse. At the hearing for Temporary Support, I find out my attorney did not properly upload my financial records to the court and the hearing has to be postponed. I made sure to say to my attorney, I trust I am not going to be charged for the time to prep for this hearing or to attend it? I hear nothing back but I am of course charged to read the email and charged for the time it took for them to screw up the hearing. Long story short? They did nothing for me and took $9500 from me. They are sitting on the balance of my retainer refusing to return it to me because I am disputing their billing. To top it all off? My Mom paid for my legal fees with the understanding that I would pay her back once I settle my divorce. Mr. Humphrey went so far as to indicate that it should not matter to me that he is holding onto my money because my Mom paid him. They are a horror!

Unwilling, Unhelpful and Unresponsive

I hired this firm based upon their reviews. Upon further investigation, all the 5 star reviews Have a very similar writing voice. Perhaps writing themselves reviews is what they do all day, because it certainly isn't helping their clients. The first thing Mr. Humphrey did was pawn my case off on h...is associate, Chloe Lancaster. That would be fine if she had done her job. She did not. Through the entire process both lawyers demonstrated disinterest in my case. The entire strategy seemed to be simply offering the other side more money until a settlement was reached. My case did have to go to court. By the end I had over 40 unanswered emails that I sent between Ms Lancaster and Mr Humphrey. In court, it became apparent that they did not remember the specifics of my case or the nature of my employment. This resulted in me losing my house despite a prenuptial agreement that was in place. I had to pay the other side's fees despite the fact that I sent them evidence that I had already provided the opposing side with thousands of dollars (at their direction) which they did not pass along to the court or seem aware of on the court date. This was in an unanswered email. I also had support judgements rendered based upon unemployment that I was not collecting. After hiring a new lawyer to revise the judgements, it became apparent to me that they did not know what the law was regarding division of military disability for support in WA. They also earned me no credits for the time I did spend with my children in my custody or medical insurance I was paying for,, because they did not enter them into my support worksheet. This cost me over 900 dollars a month in erroneously awarded support until I had to hire a real lawyer to fix it. When I did actually talk to this firm, Ms.Lancaster said, "do not worry about temporary orders because they are temporary". My temporary orders cost me over 5500 dollars a month at a time when I was losing my income. I don't know how I'm not supposed to worry about that, but it left me in a position where we had to settle. This firm seemed happy to get rid of me, once they billed me for all the hours they obviously did not spend working on my case. Please do not hire them.

Useless

This firm tells you what you want to hear, then fails to even come close to expectations. My "lawyer", Chloe Lancaster, was very slow to respond to any type of communications I sent, [if at all]. and followed through with very few questions I had, ultimately costing me thousands of dollars. She seeme...d to be more interested in collecting money from me by charging for every little detail, rather than being on my side like a lawyer should, and getting me what I deserved. If I had to do it again, I would hire a real lawyer, not someone like this who is only in it for personal gain.

Withheld my case file

I hired Mr Humphrey to represent me in a divorce case. Months into it he filed a motion to withdraw as my attorney without notifying me prior. I found out a week later. When I asked for my case file he refused to let me have it until an outstanding debt was paid off. He kept it from me for 4 months a...nd finally sent it to me 7 days before my trial started. Leaving me with sanctions filed against me for not submitting materials on time and with no evidence to support my case at trial. Worst situation to be in. When you hire an attorney you expect them to look out for you not be the one to screw you over. Beware!

Lack of Communication

I hired Mr Humphrey to represent me in a high conflict divorce/custody case against my narcissist ex. My biggest issue is the lack of response to my emails and calls. I would sometimes have to wait 1-2weeks before he would get in touch with me even on important urgent matters. I wasn’t updated on mat...ters or issues when his office received them and when I needed him to send OC any requests or orders it would take a few weeks for his office to send it out. I’m not sure if Mr Humphrey is too busy to get anything done in a timely manner or if it is the office staff that needs reorganizing. Which ever it is something needs to change so clients feel like their case is not forgotten or ignored during a difficult time in their life.
