Exceptional Experience

A divorce is not something most of us can imagine being a positive experience, but the process that John facilitated for me and my former husband was actually that. John listened, both to the things we said and to the things we didn't even know how to say, and shepherded us towards an understanding t...hat met both of our needs. His diligence, his attention to detail, his obvious experience and knowledge, made us both feel safe, while his personal warmth and excellent communication skills made us feel heard and understood. He and his amazing assistant, Patty, kept us continuously updated on each step of the divorce process, so that we never felt lost or as if we were just a case number. I cannot speak highly enough of this experience. It was, believe it or not, very healing. I would happily recommend John and his office to anyone going through the painful and complicated business of a divorce.

Not Recommended

John Gartland is not recommended by this reviewer. Ex wife and I entered into mediation to form a post nuptial agreement on division of assets. We started out with a difference of $45,000 between our positions and after three sessions we were over $80,000 apart and not speaking. Thanks at least in... part to Mr. Gartland, we remain distant, distrustful of each other, and ended up in a protracted negotiation utilizing two other attorneys. Based on prior discussions with ex, we entered mediation with both of us wanting “fairness” and instead, got “what a judge might do” shoved down our throats with no basis in Oregon case law. Additionally, his arbitrary process of assets accounting, with no consideration for gathering of factual info was not helpful. Thankfully, we had the sense to stop his madness before it went further, and eventually got back to where we were prior to spending thousands of dollars on his “process”.
