Extensive experience representing individuals and small business owners as Debtors in chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcy cases including extensive pre-bankruptcy planning, asset protection strategies, lien strip litigation, cram down litigation, foreclosure protection and others. Special efforts devoted to the "tax challenged" so that they can overcome this problem which can haunt for years.

For years my practice has revolved around helping honest people keep their homes. Most of the time a bankrutpcy was the best solution. In recent years with the decline in home values we have to be more creative and can assist with loan modification or foreclosure mediation. Furthermore, with banks and loan servicer practices so abusive our clients need a strong advocate to fight for them and protect their rights. We represent our clients as Plaintiffs against Big Bank and we defend as well.

See my other case specific experience. Extensive experience representing Debtors in bankruptcy and insolvency related litigation. As plaintiffs in automatic stay and discharge injunction enforcement, as plaintiffs in foreclosure defense work and as Defendants in nondischargeability actions.

Excellent service and follow-up.
Mike informed me of my options and made suggestions based on what was best for me. He made me feel comfortable with no judgment which was a big deal as I was judging myself for being in this situation. I have referred him to several people and will continue to place my trust in him and his services.

Great lawyer & guide though bankruptcy
Mike O'Brian and his team were a breath of fresh air during a stressful time. From the initial meeting, I realized the depth of knowledge he had in his field and the attention to detail he has for his clients. This put me at ease. His team kept me well informed, on-pace, on-point and ready for every step. They were always responsive, kind and helpful. Also, I liked that they educated me though out the process so my expectations matched reality. I am so thankful.

Great help - so grateful!
I am so appreciative of the excellent help, competency, and kindness I received from Michael O'Brien and Ted Piteo! I spoke with 7 bankruptcy firms, and because of my particular type of debt and amount of assets I have, none of them had a solution that helped me out - I was very worried about financial hardship without bankruptcy. Finally, I found O’Brien and Associates, and they were the only firm in the entire state of Oregon that had first-hand experience with a new part of the Chapter 11 code (subchapter V) – this is the route we took to succeed in my bankruptcy. I worked with both of the firm’s attorneys, Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Piteo. They are both highly qualified and competent, with complementary strengths that make them an excellent and formidable team. They are just honest, good people – I’d enjoy having them as neighbors! Both Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Piteo have a high degree of integrity, and I trust them both. For example, at one point, I understood Mr. O’Brien to have made a billing commitment, and when I saw something that seemed to not match that commitment, I called him up and we worked it out in a mutually acceptable, reasonable way that left me trusting him more. My case was moderately complex (at least for a small business owner such as myself), and both Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Piteo did an excellent job of assessing potential weaknesses in my case and explaining potential outcomes, so I always felt secure knowing what potential pitfalls might come and how to deal with them. Mr. O’Brien did high-quality and skillfully-nuanced settlement negotiations with one of my creditors (my ex-wife). Mr. Piteo represented me during the pendency of my case in bankruptcy court. He did an excellent job of negotiating with one of my creditors to ease the way to getting my plan confirmed. He also was timely with answering my questions, and allaying my concerns by providing me with honest, accurate information. An added bonus is that Mr. Piteo is lively and fun, which made the entire process easier to handle, and I even enjoyed it! Mr. Piteo did such an excellent job of litigating my case in bankruptcy court, to the point that the judge gave her ruling at the end of the hearing, and we won everything we proposed in the Chapter 11 reorganization plan. He also did an excellent job preparing me to testify, both with specific questions he’d ask me, and how to handle combative questions from my ex-wife’s lawyer. I am so relieved I found O’Brien and Associates, that I could trust them, and I am very grateful for their great care, competence, and help in my 100% successful bankruptcy case. They delivered as they said they would, without surprises, and I highly recommend them.

Thoughtful, Organized and Great Results
A very thoughtful and organized approach that was customized to my particular situation. I researched many firms and they wanted to pigeon hole my unique situation into a stock course of action. Michael works with you to flush out the best strategy and solution given the facts of your situation. Very highly recommended.

Best attorney, well established in Portland, Oregon!
After listening to, & hiring other attorneys in the Portland, Oregon area, none of whom did my case of settling my mortgage case ANY good after the 2007/2008 crash, I finally was referred to Michael O’Brien. What a Godsend! I simply cannot say enough about him. I found him to be thorough, extremely professional, leaving no stone unturned, and finally my case was settled to my satisfaction. To this day I cannot believe it. You will not find a better, more steadfast attorney than Mike O’Brien. He’s easy to work with, very courteous, kind, informative. My family and I are forever grateful that he stayed the course, and never gave up, ever. As complex as the situation was, he streamlined everything for me and made it seem simple to follow, whereas other attorneys left me feeling emotionally & financially drained, and nothing was accomplished by comparison. It’s like he saw the goal, & that was it. He made me feel like it was teamwork too, which was great. So great getting to know him. HIGHLY Recommend!

Excellent
Besides a wealth of knowledge, Mike brought to the table compassion, patience and a human face to an embarrassing situation, foreclosure. When meeting with him you never felt he wasn't listening or that he was watching the clock. He was always efficient in person, through email correspondence or over the telephone. This was evident in his monthly statements - there was never a feeling of sticker shock. In the end it was money well spent. When interacting with the firm's staff, they were always friendly, responsive and definitely a compliment to the whole team.

5 star recommendation!
I've been working with Mr. O'Brien for 5 years. I went through a Chapter 13 and they were very sensitive to my situation. Professional, Timely, and Considerate. Both Mr. O'Brien and his paralegal made me feel comfortable and always got back to me with questions that came up throughout the year. I would definitely recommend Michael O'Brien as an attorney.

He's an awesome attorney!
My husband and I had no other recourse except file for a chapter 13 on a construction company when the economy crashed. This was devastating to us. Mr O'Briien not only helped us through a very rough time but treated us with dignity and compassion. We could not speak higher of Mr. O'Brien. He is an awesome attorney!

Thankful I chose to work with Michael
When the economy tanked in 2008, so did my business and it left me with a lot of personal financial debt that eventually led me to have to file for bankruptcy. Working with Michael, I was able to file for Chapter 7 and eliminate my debt. I simply could not be more happy with the level of professionalism and understanding that he and his staff provided, so that is why I am writing this review. His team is really good at what they do and treat his clients with respect and dignity, which was a welcomed change after dealing with harassing creditors. If you are at that point where you are going to have to file for bankruptcy, do yourself a favor and set up an appointment with Michael to see if he can help. My initial meeting was no pressure where he reviewed my case and gave me an honest assessment of how he could help. Once I made the decision to use Michael, no time at all was wasted to get the process started and my bankruptcy petition filed. He and his team were there throughout the entire process, which was about three months from when I made the decision to file until I got the discharge documentation from the court. Even afterwards, his team helped remove a lien that a creditor failed to remove after the bankruptcy was filed - that is customer service!

Thank goodness for Mike O'Brien!
We had started our case with another lawyer, who completely dropped the ball and would have cost us thousands of dollars. Thankfully, were referred to Mr. O'BRIEN, who was able to see us immediately and literally saved the day. He or his trusty senior paralegal have responded immediately to our every inquiry, calming our fears and putting us at ease. This lawyer has our trust and our future business!

A Fine Example of Lawyering
I can't say enough about how pleased I am that Michael O'Brien was referred to me. He handled my foreclosure thoroughly and with the utmost professionalism. He explained the process in terms that I could understand and kept me apprised of the status along the way. I had a 20 year career as a legal assistant and was also married to an attorney for 22 years, so I have known many lawyers and witnessed many different styles of practice. I felt that Mike handled my case in a way that made me feel that I was an important client, yet he did not try to be my buddy or best friend, which can actually work against an attorney/client relationship in many ways. There were a few times where I had to send a second email to prompt a response from Mike, but having worked with so many attorneys in my past, I know how busy the legal field can be and I'm probably a bit more forgiving than some clients might be. Nonetheless, I felt that he always got back to me within a reasonable amount of time. I would have no reservations whatsoever recommending Mike to anyone in need of his services.

Highly Recommend Michael O'Brien
Unfortunately, I was irresponsible financially and made choices causing nearly 160k in debt to a lot of creditors including IRS and Oregon DOR - the worse part, I wasn't even a homeowner. I was stuck, felt lost, and was spiraling downhill fast. I read reviews about Mr. O'Brien and was so fortunate to hire him. He has seriously changed my life. I'm a better and more responsible person. He wasn't there just to collect fees, he treated me like family. He was there every time I needed counsel - even on weekends. My case was difficult, and Mr. O'Brien negotiated with all my creditors and trustee to the point where I can sleep at night. He made sure on every level, my financial mistakes were just that. We all live in a life where we have the right to make choices. Outside of marrying my beautiful wife, this choice to hire Mr. O'Brien was the best in my 35 years. Don't hesitate to think twice about hiring Mr. O'Brien. I am still in an active chapter 13, and have been for nearly 3 years. I am on a maximum 5 year plan. The most recent thing (literally a week ago) Mr. O'Brien talked to the trustee to reduce my plan payment by nearly half the amount it was. Once again, even almost 3 years later, Mr. O'Brien is still right there with me through every step. I just hope nobody has to experience the horrible financial mess I wrapped myself into - but should you need someone to help you and counsel you to a better you - please trust me and hire Mr. O'Brien. Don't waste energy and time searching and interviewing attorneys. Take it from someone that still is under his care. God Bless!

This guy saved us a bundle of money.
Michael and his firm represented my wife and me in a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. He is bright, attentive, and sensitive to the personal issues arising from bankruptcy. I have recommended him to a number of friends and business associates over the years and would use him again in a heartbeat.

Mr. Alvin R. Campbell
From day one Michael was direct, informative & was able to explain in detail my questions regarding the intricacies of dealing with my business and personal situation. In a nut shell I saw him tower over his fellow attornies with industry knowlwedge and could back up his thoughts on the spot.
