UPDATE: My son’s father has now died after years of alcohol and drug addiction. The parent evaluator recommended provisions requiring substance-abuse evaluation and treatment, yet Thomas Elliott failed to make sure those critical protections were included. I firmly believe that if those provisions ha...d been properly pursued and enforced, my son’s father might have received treatment and could still be alive today. My seven-year-old son is now without his father, and I will never forgive how seriously Mr. Elliott failed my child and me.
Mr. Elliott was condescending, arrogant, rude, accusatory, and shockingly unprofessional toward me and my entire family. He constantly rolled his eyes, shut us down, acted annoyed whenever I tried to explain important concerns, and treated me as though I were beneath him. His tone, facial expressions, and body language were repugnant. I had to ask him to show basic professionalism, patience, and compassion while preparing for trial. There was no trust, support, or genuine effort to understand what my child and I had experienced.
I also became deeply concerned about his relationship with my ex’s attorney and whether he was truly advocating for me. He waited until approximately three days before trial to seriously prepare my case. I was not properly shown the evidence being used against me, I was not given a meaningful opportunity for rebuttal, and he never cross-examined my ex because court time ran out. Rather than fight to finish the case, he pressured me to settle and warned that I could lose custody if I did not agree. This was especially outrageous because the parent evaluator had recommended that I receive custody.
He pressured me into accepting joint custody and language giving my ex final authority over health decisions, despite the documented concerns involving his substance abuse. He failed to include the evaluator’s recommended protections involving alcohol, drugs, evaluation, and treatment. I did not agree with the final document and felt forced into signing it through fear and pressure.
His billing was also outrageous. I was initially told that approximately $10,000 should cover the remaining work, yet the bill suddenly reached approximately $17,000 in about one month without proper warning. He charged excessively for work that was not completed or meaningfully discussed with me, including $450 to drive from Tualatin to downtown Portland. We attended court only once for approximately seven hours, he did not cross-examine my ex, and many of the questions he asked me under oath did not even appear designed to help my case.
He also handled child support poorly. He failed to obtain adequate bank records and three years of tax returns from my ex, even though my ex operated his own business and I had concerns about unreported income. After my ex and I had agreed on an amount, Mr. Elliott took it upon himself to propose recalculating it without first discussing it with me, resulting in my child receiving approximately $60 less per month.
I paid this man thousands of dollars to protect my child and advocate for me. Instead, I felt belittled, pressured, overcharged, ignored, and worked against. The consequences were not minor. My son’s father is now dead from the very addictions that the evaluator’s recommended provisions were intended to address. In my opinion, Thomas Elliott’s failure to fight for those protections had devastating and irreversible consequences for my family.
I strongly do not recommend Thomas Elliott. Anyone considering hiring him should read every document carefully, demand a complete accounting of every charge, insist that all evaluator recommendations be included, and obtain a second legal opinion before signing anything. PS. Picture needs to be desperately updated. His gait and physical appearance do not match the current posted image.
